🚨 KELCE UPDATE: A Long Road Ahead, But He's Fighting Every Step of the Way 🚨

Thanks to your generosity, we've raised $600 toward the approximately $7,000 needed for Kelce's orthopedic care and heartworm treatment. We are incredibly grateful, but we still have a long way to go.

Last week, Kelce underwent surgery to remove an improperly placed metal rod from his rear leg. The rod had migrated into places it never should have been—embedded in his ankle joint, protruding through the top of his lower leg bone, and lodged beneath his kneecap and upper leg bone. It's difficult to imagine the amount of pain this sweet boy endured.

As if that wasn't enough, cultures collected during surgery came back positive for a severe antibiotic-resistant Staph/Pseudomonas infection. Kelce has now begun an intensive 8-week course of powerful antibiotics, which means his heartworm treatment will need to be delayed until the infection is under control.

The infection eventually broke through the skin, creating a large and painful blister on his upper thigh. Yet through every procedure, every bandage change, and every setback, Kelce has remained incredibly resilient.

Now, just 10 days after surgery, we're finally seeing encouraging signs. He's walking more steadily, putting more weight on the leg each day, and beginning to show us glimpses of the healthy dog we know is still in there.

But healing comes at a cost.

Between emergency orthopedic surgery, diagnostic testing, hospitalization, medications, follow-up care, and the heartworm treatment still to come, Kelce's medical expenses continue to grow. We are asking for your help to give this abandoned boy the second chance he deserves.

POSIE has been through so much.

Nearly three years ago, Posie was adopted from Missouri German Shepherd Rescue as a special-needs girl. Because she can be selectively reactive to other dogs, she waited a very long time for her perfect match. When that special person finally came along, Posie settled into a happy life filled with love, security, and companionship.

Then everything changed.

Several months ago, Posie's adopter passed away unexpectedly.

Suddenly, Posie found herself without the person she loved most. She spent several days boarded at her adopter's veterinary clinic before returning to MOGS. With very few foster homes available that could accommodate her needs as an only dog, she spent time in boarding while we searched for a place where she could begin healing.

Today, these photos make our volunteers smile.

After several weeks in a wonderful foster home, Posie is finally beginning to relax again. She's rediscovering soft beds, warm blankets, comfy couches, gentle routines, and, most importantly, the love and patience of a caring foster family. For the first time in a long time, she's smiling again.

Posie is not currently available for adoption. She still has some healing to do as she works through the confusion and trauma of losing everything familiar so suddenly.

We're sharing her story today because it carries an important reminder.

No matter our age, life can change in an instant. None of us likes to think about illness, injury, incapacity, or death, but our pets depend on us to prepare for the unexpected.

Every adopted MOGS dog goes home with a Dog Will. This document tells us who has agreed to assume care and custody of the dog if something happens to the adopter. But that's only one piece of the puzzle.

It's equally important to include your pets in your estate planning. Talk with family members, friends, or caregivers who may be willing to help. Put your wishes in writing through a will, trust, or other legal document. Make sure the people you've chosen know your plans and are willing to honor them.

Our pets give us their whole hearts. One of the greatest gifts we can give them in return is a plan that protects them, even when we're no longer able to. 🐾💞

Little Miss FREYA hit the adoption jackpot over the weekend, and got to go home with a new forever mom, and lots of extended family, with lots and lots of doggo buddies to play with!

🚨🐾 URGENT FUNDRAISER FOR KELCE 🐾🚨

Nine days ago, Missouri German Shepherd Rescue welcomed this handsome 4-year-old boy into our program. Originally known as Knox, we've decided this resilient survivor deserves a fresh start—and a new name. Meet KELCE. ❤️

Kelce came to us from one of our local shelter partners after being picked up as a stray. Despite an extended stray hold, no owner ever came forward to claim him.

What veterinarians discovered next was heartbreaking.

When Kelce arrived at the shelter, he was severely lame on his right rear leg, frequently toe-tapping and showing obvious signs of pain. X-rays revealed that a previously placed orthopedic rod was the wrong size and improperly positioned—extending from inside his ankle joint, through the length of his lower leg bone, out the top, and protruding into the underside of his kneecap and upper leg bone.

No wonder he was struggling to walk.

As if that wasn't enough, Kelce also tested Heartworm positive, carrying what veterinarians believe to be a heavy worm burden.

Either of these conditions alone can be devastating.

Together, they become the kind of medical case that many dogs simply don't survive without rescue intervention.

Today, Kelce is back in his foster home recovering from emergency surgery to correct the damage to his leg. That surgery alone has already cost more than $5,000.

We are now awaiting culture results to identify the infection caused by the improperly placed implant. Once the infection is under control and his incision has healed, Kelce will begin Heartworm treatment—a process expected to cost more than $1,000 for a dog his size.

And size matters here.

Kelce weighs in at a whopping 100 pounds! 😲

By the time his orthopedic care, infection treatment, rehabilitation, and heartworm treatment are complete, we expect to spend more than $7,000 giving this incredible dog the second chance he deserves.

💔 We couldn't walk away from him.

💔 We couldn't leave him in pain.

💔 We couldn't let his story end there.

But we can't do this alone.

Why a unicorn in training, you ask?

At just 8 months old, Cali has already overcome more than most puppies ever should. This sweet girl was rescued from the streets by our amazing rescue partners at Raytown Animal Control, who spent considerable time and patience earning her trust and safely bringing her to shelter.

Based on her history, it's likely Cali never had the opportunity to grow up in a loving home. That means she's still learning all the important things every good dog needs to know—house training, basic manners, confidence-building, and how to navigate the world as a beloved family companion. She'll benefit from continued positive exposure to new people, places, and experiences to help make up for the socialization she missed early in life.

But here's the best part...

Cali is an absolute sweetheart. 💕

She may take a minute to warm up, but once she decides you're her person, get ready for nonstop tail wags, happy hops, and plenty of kisses. She loves other dogs and participated successfully in large playgroups at the shelter, making canine friends of all sizes.

The dedicated team at Raytown Animal Control started Cali's journey toward trusting humans and building confidence. Now she's looking for someone special to help her finish it.
