Wishing everyone a Happy Winter Solstice from Grand Canyon National Park.

Today, December 21st, the Northern Hemisphere will experience the fewest hours of sunlight, resulting in the longest night of the year! Sunrise is at 7:35 am. Sunset at 5:17 pm.

Here at Grand Canyon the exact moment of Winter Solstice is this afternoon at 2:48 pm (MST). Day length today is 9 hours and 42 minutes; that's 4 hours and 54 minutes shorter than on the Summer Solstice in June.

To many Indigenous communities across the nation, Winter Solstice is a reminder to care for our spiritual selves, prepare for longer days ahead, and perform special ceremonies and dances. It is a time to reconnect to the natural world —a source of teaching.

In the words of Calvin Chimoni, Zuni Pueblo Tribal member, and NPS employee at El Morro and El Malpais National Monuments, “Winter solstice is a time for centering—a time to reflect our beginnings and reconnecting our roots. It’s a time when we fulfill duties and anticipate positive outcomes for all.”

What will you do to prepare for the longest night of the year?

Oh, and with the Christmas and New Year's Holiday period here, it's becoming really busy. If you're planning to visit the South Rim during the holidays, here are some helpful tips about parking, getting around, and what to see and do > https://go.nps.gov/sr-tips (8763)

If this vista allowed you to look directly down on the Colorado River, you would be looking at a river almost a mile (1.6 km) below. That is how far down the river has cut through the rock layers over the past five million years. It is still cutting, but at a slower rate. Now it is slicing at the extra-hard basement rock.

If it weren’t for the river there would be no Grand Canyon. Its down cutting triggers side-canyon erosion, the side streams race to reach the level of the Colorado, and so doing, widen this great chasm. The rock, gravel, and sediment keep falling into the canyon, and, like a grand conveyor belt, the river keeps carrying them away.
