Crack Inspection:

In our line of work, the Wet-Magnaflux method is superior when it comes to inspecting for cracked components. Any place where there is a crack, the magnetic lines of force will attract the particles to the crack. The particles are extremely fine making them very sensitive to even the smallest cracks.

We do not use dye & powder for crack inspection for ferrous metals because it is not as accurate or considered an acceptable practice; there are too many false negatives and you really need to use the proper solvents to remove all residual oils. If you don't, the dye will not readily soak into the part. The is especially true when it comes to transmissions. The long chain hydrocarbons found in gear oils are far too stable and the dye won't be able to enter the crack. The dye is not a solvent and lacks VOCs and will just lay on the surface of the crack, only to get easily wiped off. When sprayed with the powder developer, it will result in a false negative, not showing the crack. This is why it is not a good indicator of cracks and why I bought a legit wet magnaflux inspection machine 25 years ago.

It is important to know the limitations of dye & powder method. There are better and more accurate ways to inspect for cracks and we use them here at TRE.

Dye & Powder does have its place in our shop and we use it to check for cracks on nonferrous metals such as aluminum cases.

Contact T.R.E. for rear diff service and upgrades. We are actually caught up on work and can offer quick turn around times.

Just because all the teeth are there doesn't mean that trouble isn't lurking.

Good friend, Andy Smedegard, owner if ASM, drove past the shop late last night to pick up these bad boys. He also dropped off 3 BMW rear diffs that we built years ago for inspection. Yes we work on BMWs and they are damn good.

Most of you do not fully know the full scope of our work, or what we are willing to work on, because the website is severely lacking.

We are always interested in "mission impossible", the stuff that nobody is willing to work on.

We like 100+ year old stuff and the newest in new.

We prefer road racing stuff these days but will work on just about anything as long as there are parts available.

Keep us in mind for your next project.

Have a 89-99 DSM, or a 94-06 EVO?

I have a couple unclaimed PPG dogboxes left. Send me an email to my [email protected] and I will reply back.
