Makeshift is a combined studio residency & gallery located in downtown Kalamazoo.

Makeshift offers two months of free studio access followed by a solo gallery exhibition for six handpicked artists each year. The Makeshift team is dedicated to supporting work that crosses boundaries, encourages conversations, and develops creative culture in our community. Through in depth engagement with the public, we hope to demystify the creative process and make contemporary art more accessible.

Here's a little sneak preview from What's Mine is Mine, by Beverly Fitzpatrick, our current resident artist. We hope you can stop by Saturday night for the opening reception. (Costumes welcomed!)

Saturday, Oct 29 / 6-9 pm
Park Trades, Suite 209-L

Beverly uses collage, sculpture, and installation in an attempt to wryly articulate current socio-political anxieties. Through her characteristic mode of intricately crafted and surrealistic image-building, she skewers this contemporary theme with her familiar arsenal of cannibalized magazines, advertisements, and other appropriated images.

Cut & Paste Kalamazoo 10/18/2016

In honor of our current recent resident artist, Beverly Fitzpatrick (Heavyweight Collager of the World), Makeshift invited Kalamazoo to collage with us for a night of creativity, conversation, and community engagement. The turnout was a diverse group of new and familiar faces, all of which contributed to a total of 64 collages! As the night progressed, our blank gallery walls slowly filled with some pretty amazing work. Thanks, Kalamazoo! Feel free to include your name in the comment section if you see your collage in this gallery.

(Don't forget – if you would like to retrieve your work, you must be present to pick it up at one of our next events. Stay tuned for dates.)
