101 Tales of Magic and Mystery 10/25/2025

I had the honor to contribute to this awesome collection of system-agnostic one-shots alongside a crew of talented creators: Damian Arteaga, Timothy Ferguson, Chris Hopper, Brian Johnson, Cassidy Lane, Mark Lawford, and John Tibbetts. The folks at poured so much work and thought into this tome - check it out!

101 Tales of Magic and Mystery TTRPG adventure plots of mystery, magic, and intrigue, grounded in the history and folklore of Renaissance England.

A first-time TTRPG player told me that they wished they'd known the hook along with the genre and setting before creating a character. (I usually save the hook for an opening-scene demo where they learn about the game and world.) Do y'all have thoughts on pros and cons of before- vs in-game hooks?

How I Played D&D With My Toddler 09/13/2025

Click bait title aside, I have been looking forward to playing TTRPGs with my little one since I was pregnant. TTRPGkids showed me that it was possible to run games for even the youngest of players. I've relied greatly on their insights and advice as I begin my own journey of RPing with Tiny Dragon, so it was an honor to highlight their work in this article. You can read about my experience running StoryGuider (and check out the crowdfunding campaign) on the Young Dragonslayers blog:

How I Played D&D With My Toddler For players of all ages, there are a ton of benefits to Dungeons & Dragons (and games like it). But this is even more true for young players, who are in a prime stage to learn social emotional learning skills . Unfortunately, not all kids are ready to play D&D proper.

Use DND To Teach Biology and Conservationism With This Monster Manual 09/08/2025

After interviewing Lucas Zellers for this article, I was filled with evangelical zeal. Thoughtful engagement with 5e's structure! Scientific inquiry and accuracy! Conservationist principles built into the design! I hope I did the Book of Extinction justice, and I hope you are inspired by it for your own games and creations.

Use DND To Teach Biology and Conservationism With This Monster Manual Teachers, parents, and others are wondering how to teach biology in a fun way. The game of Dungeons & Dragons has already been used to teach social emotional learning, sign language, history, and more. Why not use D&D to teach biology and conservation? Mage Hand Press, creator of cus

Can You Use D&D To Teach Sign Language To Kids? 07/20/2025

I had an absolutely lovely chat with Rich of Hatchlings Games about Inspirisles, a trilogy of games that teach players sign language. The article goes everywhere from Deaf community, culture, and etiquette to how to integrate learning into the world and play of an RPG to (most impactful to me personally) the way Hatchlings has transformed their family life. I hope y'all enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!

Can You Use D&D To Teach Sign Language To Kids? Teachers and parents alike are looking for ways to teach kids sign language. And while childrenโ€™s sign language classes, sign language video tutorials, and family sign language lessons are all great ways to learn, it can be a challenge to get children invested. Weโ€™ve already seen how Dungeons &a

The SQEEEEE!!! RPG is debuting today in an actual-play stream from 1-4 EST! This is a tabletop role-playing game about the emotional world of living in community, where we can fight big emotions like anxiety and depression and learn how to help each other along the way. I've had the honor of working on this game with Pax and Kitsch for the last several months, and Kitsch has put a TON of work towards the AP: part performance, part playtest, and all passion, this is going to become something truly amazing! Highlights from this week: checking out the brand-new Education & Therapy conference nested in , getting to meet and chat with other folks who run TTRPGs for young players (and other game designers and other parents and other nerds and and and....), showing Tiny Dragon the Expo Hall (and the boffer swords), seeing my work at , celebrating our Ten-Year Gay-Aversary with and the rainbow sheep, seeing A Constructs Nature and in person, AND getting to present on q***r worldbuilding (and staying so long to chat with people after that I was late to my next session...an hour later). Truly a whirlwind, but I'm so glad I went!

I'm so jazzed that Bannerless Games did this (and even more so that I received some needed support). Instead of my old Canva-and-Microsoft-Word combo (may its many idiosyncrasies rest in peace), I'll be able to use these funds to upgrade to Affinity Publisher for IQW and all my future projects! ๐Ÿ™

In true TTRPG form, the Masks one-shot at WMU's LBGT Office became a two-shot. I've been wanting to run this system for so long, and it really delivered! I love teen-hero fiction, and everything about this game - from the GM moves customized for each Playbook to the mechanics of altering character sheets as the characters' identity is in flux - really works towards telling those kinds of stories (with very little effort). I feel like GMing PbtA games finally "clicked" for me; now I want to go back to MotW and see how it plays with a fresh perspective.
