Are your child's layers safe to wear in their car seat?
Bulky clothes can take up space around your childโs body in their car seat causing the harness to be dangerously loose in a crash. Use this test to keep them safe and warm.
1. With the coat or outfit on, buckle the child into their car seat harness.
2. Tighten the harness until it feels snug on all parts of their body and you cannot pinch any extra harness up and down at their shoulders. This means it passes the โpinch test.โ
3. Without loosening the harness, unbuckle the child and take the coat or outfit off.
4. Buckle them back into the harness and try the pinch test again.
โ
If you cannot pinch any slack, the outfit passed the test!
โIf you can pinch slack or notice the harness feels more loose on their body, the outfit is not safe for wearing in the car seat.
5. If the child needs another layer, add it around their body after they are buckled and snug in the harness.

The tether looks simple, but itโs important! It can improve the outcome in any type of crash. Is your forward-facing car seatโs tether attached?

We offer our deepest condolences to Oshtemo Fire Department and Charlie's family and friends. He was a beloved member of the first responder family and a friend to all. He will be missed.
This morning, we lost Firefighter Charlie Sullivan in a motorcycle accident in Kalamazoo. Charlie was a valued member of our department, a skilled firefighter, a loyal friend, and someone we could always rely on. His humor, pride in the job, and steady presence touched us all.
Please take care of yourselves and each other, letโs honor Charlie in how we carry ourselves forward.
