The election becomes the daily grist of the public papers, the subject of private conversations, the aim of all activity.”

A new method for book fairs
Thucydides, gave an account of the epidemic that hit Athens in 430 BC during the Peloponnesian War that puts things into an interesting historical perspective. An excerpt: “Mortality among the doctors was the highest of all, since they came more frequently in contact with the sick. Nor was any other human art or science of any help at all. Equally useless were prayers made in the temples, consultation with oracles and so forth”. Let’s hope history doesn’t completely repeat itself.
Today in 1900 Margaret Mitchell was born-she will never be “Gone With The Wind” to me.
In honor of the Nobel prize committee canceling this year’s Nobel prize for literature, I wish to remind everyone that today (in 1953) Ernest Hemingway won the Nobel prize for The Old Man and the Sea. I believe that was a story about a fish. Something smells fishy in Sweden to me.
Today (1877) is Alice B. Toklas’s birthday. I wonder if she and Gertrude Stein can get those special cookies in heaven.
Today (in 1925) The Great Gatsby was published-sure wish my parents had bought a bunch & kept the dust jackets:)
On this date in 1955 the ACLU announced that they would defend the book Howl by Allen Ginsberg against obscenity charges. I described the last copy I sold as “soiled”- does that count?
Today in 1941 Virginia Woolf passed away. Is anybody still afraid of.....?
