I spy with my little eye...an orange sulphur butterfly. These leaf-looking butterflies are common here at the ONA but can be easily missed if you donβt look closely! Next time you are out on the trails, keep an eye out for these beautiful creatures on flowers, leaves, and fluttering by!π¦

Today we are spotlighting the zebra longwing butterfly. The zebra longwing is the State Butterfly of Florida! βοΈπ
They can be found at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA all year round but are seen most abundantly around June. On average, adult butterflies live only 2-4 weeks. But, over time, the zebra longwing has developed a 'pollen milkshake' recipe that allows them to increase its lifespan to live up to several months!

Hermit crabs are commonly found creatures along the coast of Florida. While they do not harm humans and are easy to pick up, we ask that you do not. Hermit crabs are not pets and prefer to be in their natural environment rather than your hand! ποΈ
Despite their name, Hermit crabs are more closely related to lobsters than crabs. π¦ There are 1100 species of Hermit crabs across the world! Hermit crabs live for around 3 to 4 years and can be anywhere from 1/4 of an inch to 4 inches in size!
Keep your eyes peeled for these friendly little creatures!π¦

The lagoon is an extraordinary part of the ONA due to its exclusive access and array of wildlife. Upsidedown jellyfish are the most prominent animal in the lagoon, but often times you may see manatees, bull sharks, mullet, crabs, and more! The lagoon is best accessible at high tide by kayak or paddleboard. We hope to see you on the water!βοΈ

The hotter it is, the more likely you are to see this little guy scurrying about the trails at up to 18 mph speeds. βοΈ
The Six-lined Racerunner is one of the only native lizard species at the Outstanding Natural Area and is often seen speeding about the scrub habitat surrounding the north trail. π΄
