Wrangell’s first totem pole raising in 38 years! What an incredible experience to witness the community literally pulling together to stand the Kadashan pole in Totem Park. Haida master carver Sgwaayaans TJ Young from the Yaadaas Clan was the lead carver on the Kadashan Pole. The design of the pole dates back 200 years to the staff Kadashan’s Haida relatives gifted him to commemorate marriages between Haida and Tlingit people. The last replica of the pole was done in 1940 and stood for about 70 years. Gunalchéesh, Háw’aa to the other lead carvers, Joe Young and Tommy Joseph and apprentice carvers Mike Hoyt, Tony Harding, Linda Churchill and Susie Beebe for their work on the other totems to ensure the art of carving lives on in this community. #Tlingit #Haida #AlaskaNative #TotemPole
