Kelly For Juneau Assembly 10/01/2021

Last night there was a highly attended special meeting of the Assembly regarding the continuation of covid measures and reinsertion of language allowing CSO’s and JPD to enforce a financial penalty for noncompliance concerning masks. After nearly 4 hours and well over 40 people presenting public testimony, the Assembly unanimously passed the ordinance with a shorter timeframe but did not remove the enforcement or penalty for noncompliance. Though there was much discussion about the penalty, nothing passed a vote. Like many others, I feel frustration because much of the public doesn’t feel they they are being fully represented- and that stings. One of the reasons I am running for an Assembly seat is to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and listened to. Most who testified or emailed do not support forcing compliance and removing the choice to do what is best for one’s own health and family members. This ordinance will not stop covid. It will not successfully slow the spread without inflicting greater harm and damage. I do not support it. However, I DO support measures and strategies that work. Our families, businesses, tourism industry, schools, churches, mental health, and our residents depend on it.

***This is an updated version of a previous post, which contained inaccurate information regarding the final vote.
