Had a busy day today for almost 2 hours 😆.
Gathered my cow herd, all 3 pairs LOL, hauled them home, separated the calves, vaccinated and dewormed the calves, then vaccinated and dewormed the cows and bull, and got everybody situated for weaning, then fed. To be honest my dogs D**e and Jake did 90% of the work, I just walked along whistling commands.
In a few days, when the cows quiet down, I'll haul them back over to the winter pasture. Then in about a month I'll give the calves a booster and relieve the bulls of their manhood. The following day I'll have fresh mountain oysters for breakfast. That's probably too much information for some, but by now my friends all know that I don't let good food go to waste.
Anyway, happy Friday... couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day.
Dave Stamey concert is just 2 days away!
Friday July 23rd.
It's going to be a great evening of entertainment.

It was brought to my attention recently that there exists a crisis in rural America. Apparently, a shocking few teens nowadays possess the skills/ability to properly stack hay bales, especially in western Oregon. I feel partially responsible for this. My insistence on doing all of my own stacking has no doubt played a part in this travesty, by denying our local youth the opportunity to learn, therefore I believe I should accept the responsibility of helping to right this wrong. So, after much soul searching and prayer, I've come to the conclusion that the best way to rectify this situation is to pass on my wisdom and expertise to the next generation.
To achieve this, I've decided to offer classes, completely free of charge, to all local kids who desire to learn this useful skill. For those who live too distant to travel to our location daily, we can provide room and board at a very reasonable rate. There will be no limit on class size, but dates will be determined by Mother Nature, typically beginning in June and last approximately 2 weeks, occasionally longer but rarely more than a month. Remember, this will be 100% free of cost to the students, they simply show up every day necessary when hay is ready and absorb the knowledge. Curriculum will include proper attire, hayfield etiquette, how to pick up bales without pulling strings off, appropriate language, stacking on the trailer, strapping down a load, required prayers on the trip home, staying hydrated, unloading trailer (without breaking bales), hay shed stacking technique and post-stacking refreshments....curriculum subject to change without notice.
Sadly, it's too late to hold a class for 2020, as I've just finished stacking 1150 bales in our barn and hay shed, and have no more storage room, but signups for the inaugural 2021 class will begin soon.

It was a mighty nice day yesterday, and a great evening to relax for a minute with a canine buddy and watch the sun set after feeding.

Happy Thanksgiving!
This morning I gathered the last of our bovine family off the mountain meadows and brought them home. I'm thankful for beautiful weather, good roads, great dogs, easy loading, safe travels, and arriving home to the aroma of fresh homemade dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls. I am blessed in more ways than I can count.
The dot in the red circle is cowdog Sioux...D**e and Tack are just outside the frame, stage left. (Due to the bright sunshine I couldn't even see the screen on my phone.) I had to canter to get to the gate and close it behind the cows, and I was afoot.
I'd have taken a horse but there wouldn't have been room in the trailer for him and the cows.
Tomorrow I'll vaccinate and deworm the cows and haul them to the winter pasture. Saturday I'll boost vaccinate the heifer calves and do some rearranging here at home, then some rawhide work...hopefully.
Have a great weekend!

The L C Ranch barnyard rumors are true. Uma the wonder horse is confirmed in foal to Silver Tongue 😈 (STD). The old man still had one good swimmer.

Cowpup Ike says 90° is almost too hot for working cows. I agree, that's why I'm sitting in the shade with a cold beverage.
I happened to be feeding about the time Snowball calved, so I provided the cheering section.
It has been a while since I posted an update, so here you go.
It's that time of year to wean calves, and today was the day. I took cowdogs Tack, D**e and Sioux up to the summer place and gathered our little bunch. Then we sorted the cows off and brought the calves and bull home. It will be noisy around here the next few days, but the calves look good and this evening they are hardly noticing that their moms are missing. By tomorrow they will be bawling nonstop, craving the warm milk in their bellies. The cows likewise will be lamenting the loss of their calves, and complaining about the discomfort of their full udders, but those fetuses they are carrying will soon enjoy the lack of competition from a 7 month old sibling sucking momma down. I will soon enjoy meals provided by an unwilling donation of mountain oysters as the bull calves are converted to steers. The cycle continues.
Cowpup Ike found it difficult to focus on "walking up" on a cow when there's calves around. He's almost as curious about them as they are of him. Lol
This new calf, just a few hours old, would naturally follow anything that moved...including me, but mom got his attention and turned him around. Watch what happens when he gets too frisky and tries to run. LOL
