❄️ Why Does a Water Heater Stop Working in Winter?

Water heaters break down much more often during the winter. Many homeowners call as soon as cold weather hits and the hot water suddenly disappears. The reasons are almost always the same — here’s what really happens and what you can do.

🔥 1. Temperature Drops and Partially Frozen Water Lines

When exterior walls freeze, the cold water line leading to the water heater can slow down or temporarily stop the flow. In cold garages, basements, and crawl spaces, pipes can partially freeze — and the heater “thinks” there’s no water, so it won’t run.

What to do:
– Open the hot water at one faucet and let it run for 3–5 minutes.
– Insulate exposed pipes or warm up the area with a small heater.

🔥 2. Low Gas Pressure

Gas companies often reduce pressure slightly during peak winter demand. Because of this, some water heaters — especially power vent and tankless — may fail to ignite.

Signs:
– clicking and shutting off,
– error messages,
– the unit hums but doesn’t fire.

What to do:
– Power the water heater off and back on.
– Check if other gas appliances are struggling too.

🔥 3. Blocked Vent (Power Vent / Direct Vent)

In winter, snow, ice, leaves, or even birds can clog the exhaust vent. Modern water heaters are very sensitive to airflow issues, and any blockage can stop them.

What to do:
– Check the vent outside to make sure it’s not blocked.
– Remove snow, ice buildup, or debris.

🔥 4. An Old Water Heater Reaches Its Limit

If your unit is 10–15 years old, winter is when weak components usually fail: thermostat, gas valve, anode rod, heat exchanger.

Signs:
– lukewarm water,
– rumbling noises,
– gas smell,
– water around the tank.

At this point, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair.

✨ What You Can Try Before Calling a Plumber

– Restart the water heater.
– Check the vent outside.
– Make sure the house has gas/electricity.
– Run hot water for 5 minutes and wait.

If nothing helps — a professional diagnosis is needed.

about Running Plumber from John Parisian.

I highly recommend The Running Plumber for water heater replacement. When my old 50-gallon unit started leaking, I needed a plumber who could respond quickly and handle a messy situation professionally—and they delivered on all fronts. From the first call on a Friday afternoon, the service was responsive and clear. Roman came by on Saturday for a free estimate and took the time to explain my replacement options and the associated costs for each, ensuring I could make an informed decision without any pressure. On the following Monday the old heater was replaced, Roman was punctual, arriving exactly on time. Dealing with a leaking water heater is inherently messy, but the work was done as quickly and neatly as possible. Roman worked efficiently to remove the old unit and install the new one, and took great care to minimize disruption and clean up thoroughly afterward. I now have a perfectly installed new water heater, and I truly appreciate the combination of clear communication, punctuality, and high-quality workmanship. If you need a plumbing emergency handled with professionalism and speed, look no further!
