Privacy governance was almost non-existent before 2000. Chief Privacy Officers were rare, and programs were built haphazardly without a clear strategy. A lot has changed since then.
Before collecting or storing data, ask the tough questions. Why is it needed? How long should it be kept? Forcing departments to justify data practices prevents unnecessary accumulation and ensures purpose-driven collection.
Maryland's move towards a more rigorous data minimization provision is catching the attention of other states. This could lead to more meaningful and enforceable data privacy laws.

It's crucial to get public input and truly listen to what people are saying, especially regarding privacy. Polls consistently show overwhelming concern, yet policies sometimes dismiss these views. Public opinion matters.
