Tax season is over! If you filed an extension, the deadline to file your paperwork is 10/15.

We will be out of the office until 5/5. You can call the office and leave a message with us if you need something before then!

If you can't make it in by 4/15, we can easily file you an extension. That gives you 6 months to gather your information to file your tax return.

*Extensions are for paperwork only. If you owe money, a payment still needs to be made by 4/15 to avoid late payment penalties.*

It's common to receive an "Important Tax Document" (W-2, 1099, etc.) after filing your return and receiving your refund. The key is to remain calm and act quickly to avoid penalties. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Contact Your Tax Preparer Immediately.
Do not ignore the document. Forward it to your tax professional right away.

2. Your Preparer Will Assess the Need for an Amendment (Form 1040-X).
Your preparer will determine one of three outcomes:
-No Change Needed: The new information has a negligible effect, and no amendment is necessary.
-Change is in Your Favor: The document reveals a missed deduction or credit, potentially leading to a larger refund via an amended return.
-An Amended Return is Required, and You Owe Money: This is the most stressful, as new income or overlooked gains mean your original tax was understated. You may have to pay back a portion of your refund plus potential interest and penalties.

3. Understanding Form 1040-X.
If an amendment is required, your preparer will file Form 1040-X. Be aware:
-Processing is Slow: Amended returns take the IRS several months to process.
-The Payment: If you owe money, your preparer will guide you on prompt payment to minimize penalties.

Involving your tax preparer immediately ensures corrections are made accurately and promptly.
