The old timers called them silvertips. Here on the east side of Glacier National Park a silvertip sub-adult grizzly bear sow. Walks from berry patch to berry bush. Just weeks before heading up and over an alpine ridge. To den on a high elevation north facing side of a mountain, for the winter.

In a isolated valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This magnificent white-tailed buck quietly moves into view from a field of tall grass. To pause for a time as the colors, textures and the animal awe is taken in. Truly no better earthly place to be at this moment.

You may recognize this bear. This is Grizzly 610, the daughter of the famous 399. I think so many people loved 399 because they got to watch her raise her cubs here in Grand Teton. And now 610 has raised cubs of her own. It’s special to have her story here in our gallery through Jeffrey J. Soulliere’s photograph. This piece is also available on our website.

The prehistoric Yellowstone Bison-Bison stands bold in flaring reddish colors, exposing an image of the American West that earns it the title of our National Mammal. It is the first national mammal to be legislated in American history, signed into law on May 9, 2016.

An American buffalo-bison bull purged as if resting upon it’s throne. With its winter coat still in force. An early springtime snow blankets Yellowstone’s ancient lake bed, in Hayden Valley. Shortly after a long night’s chilly temperatures with the frost still clinging to its whitened coat.
