Happy Juneteenth 🖤❤️💛💚
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free (more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed).
It's a reminder that history is often more complicated than the simplified versions many of us learned in school.
One of the things we love most about Michigan Tribe is that it gives us opportunities to learn from people with different experiences, perspectives, and stories than our own. We don't always get it right, but we do believe curiosity, conversation, and a willingness to listen make our community stronger.
Happy Juneteenth, Jackson.
🚨 NEW EPISODE OUT NOW 🚨
We sat down with serial entrepreneur Alicia Williams for what might be one of the most jaw-dropping conversations we've had on the podcast.
We talked about business, entrepreneurship, and what it's like to be part of a family where everyone seems to have an entrepreneurial spirit. But we also talked about Alicia's unbelievable journey of discovering she was adopted, navigating the fallout, and making sense of a truth that changed the way she understood her own story.
It's raw. It's fascinating. It's heartbreaking at times. And it's a conversation we haven't stopped thinking about since we recorded it.

We Are Not Sisters: My Big, Le***an Coloring Book ❤️🧡🩷
We spoke to Elise Houston from Sylvia's Catering about adding this awesome product to her service-based business, but it also got us talking about something else:
It's important to still "shoot your shot" on random ideas.
Not every project has to become a major revenue stream. Not every idea needs a five-year strategic plan. Sometimes it's okay to make something because it makes you laugh, because you think other people will enjoy it, or because you're curious to see what happens.

We'll take that win ❤️
Sometimes it's easy to focus only on what's next instead of stopping to appreciate what's already happened.
227 people have downloaded an episode and spent time hanging out with us on their drive, walk, workout, or cleanup time.
That's a lot of opportunities to share the stories of 📍Jackson, MI📍 entrepreneurs, community leaders, and some really cool humans doing good work in our town.
For something that started as a way to just keep MiTribe fun for us, that feels pretty cool.
Thanks for listening.

We had a blast at Art, Beer & Wine Fest this weekend 🍷✨
What made it even better? Knowing it was hosted in a space that currently celebrates Jackson's women's history, and that the event itself was brought to life by so many Michigan Tribe people and friends we've met along the way.
It's usually hard to get Alex out of the house on a Saturday (unless there's a lake involved 😅), so it was especially fun to enjoy a non-work outing in Jackson surrounded by people we've cheered for, collaborated with, learned from, and shared plenty of coffee (and occasionally wine) with over the years.
Thanks to Lauren from Taurusroad Creative House for snapping this photo of Alex and me on our way out. We had the best time.
New episode released tomorrow🍿
Elise Houston, co-owner of Sylvia's Catering, joins us to talk about building a business with her wife, navigating entrepreneurship together, and how they make it possible to actually step away, recharge, and take time off as business owners.

One of the best things about building something in your hometown is realizing that it becomes part of the story of the community itself (and will impact women in it for years to come).
We're incredibly honored that Michigan Tribe is included in the Women's History exhibit at Ella Sharp Museum. More than anything, it feels like a reflection of the many entrepreneurs, leaders, creatives, and community builders we've had the privilege of meet through this work.
Will anyone be at Art, Beer & Wine Fest this weekend? We'll be wandering around and may just pop into the exhibit while we're there 💛
We can’t WAIT to share this one with you👏
Sylvia's Catering co-owner Elise Houston 👑 joined us to talk about launching a catering business during COVID (which includes boat deliveries), working alongside your spouse every day, and keeping a business running while taking necessary breaks.
New episode drops this week.

You do not need to be everywhere online.
You need to know who your customer is, where they already spend their time, and what actually makes them pay attention.
That one shift can save business owners lightyears of wasted time, energy, and money.
Shawn Preissle talks about this in our newest Michigan Tribe Podcast episode.

Alex has been buying me Suze Orman and other money books since college… if she had her way, I swear Michigan Tribe would become a financial education institution. 😂
(Thankfully, thanks to our partnership with TRUE Community Credit Union, we can just point people toward free financial tools on our website instead.)
Our newest podcast episode features Shawn Preissle, formerly of the Michigan SBDC, who has worked with more than 2,500 small business owners across Michigan, helping them start businesses, increase profits, and eventually sell.
And according to Shawn, the biggest predictor of whether a business succeeds?
💵💵💵 Money 💵💵💵
Successful business owners know their numbers. They manage their finances. And when they don’t know something, they ask experts for help.
Which, honestly, is terrible news for the Amandas of the world who would rather do literally anything else 😅
This episode gets into the real side of entrepreneurship that people don’t talk about enough:
➡️Why so many businesses fail
➡️The mistakes business owners make when they avoid their numbers
➡️What Shawn consistently saw in successful entrepreneurs
➡️How to make smarter decisions before things become a crisis
If money stresses you out, confuses you, overwhelms you, or makes you want to immediately change the subject… this episode is probably for you.
