Babies start building fine motor skills earlier than you might think đź’›
From grasping and letting go to stacking, scribbling, and exploring toys with their hands, these early skills lay the foundation for so much learning later on.

I put together a list of simple, play-based fine motor activities for ages 0–2 that are easy to add into your day using toys and routines you already have at home.

The Stewart Park Splash Pad is up and running for the season! Join us any day of the week through Labor Day from 10:00am-7:00pm.

Some important safety rules and reminders:
- Use at Your Own Risk
- Children Must Be Supervised: Children under age 12 must be accompanied and actively supervised by a responsible adult.
- Walk, Don't Run: Running on wet surfaces is prohibited due to slip-and-fall hazards.
- No Climbing: Do not climb, hang from, or misuse splash pad equipment or spray features.
- Appropriate Footwear Strongly Recommended: Water shoes or other non-slip footwear are encouraged to help prevent injuries.
- No Glass Containers: Glass bottles, containers, and other breakable items are prohibited.
- No Rough Play: Pushing, shoving, horseplay, or other unsafe behavior is not permitted.
- Diaper Policy: Children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers designed for aquatic use.
- Stay Home if Ill: Anyone experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, a contagious illness, or open wounds should not use the splash pad.
- No Animals in the Splash Area: Service animals permitted by law are allowed, but pets should remain outside the splash pad area.
- No Food or Drinks in the Water Play Area: Food, beverages, and chewing gum should be consumed in designated picnic or seating areas.
- No Bicycles, Scooters, or Skateboards: Wheeled devices are prohibited within the splash pad area with the exception of mobility equipment for individuals with disabilities.
- Report Hazards Immediately: Notify park staff of damaged equipment, standing water, injuries, or unsafe conditions.
- Follow Staff Instructions: Park staff have authority to enforce rules and may require individuals to leave for unsafe or disruptive behavior.

Please note - The system operates on a timer and will not activate outside of the designated hours of operation. Remember that the splash pad does not run constantly during open hours. Simply press the button to activate the water elements. The elements will run for several minutes before automatically shutting back off. Some splash pad elements may not operate during off-peak hours in order to conserve water and reduce operational costs.

The splash pad is supplied with fresh water from the City’s municipal drinking water system, which meets all applicable drinking water safety standards. Because the water is not recirculated like a swimming pool, it does not require additional chemical treatment.
