This news story is just the tip of the iceberg. Our new HumaneMyth essay, Domination Games, offers an in-depth analysis of how power abuse by leadership figures in the US animal movement is harming activists, driving talented people from the work, and fueling the meat industry’s toxic agenda. http://humanemyth.org/dominationgames.htm

DOMINATION GAMES
Coming to terms with a culture of power abuse in the institutional animal advocacy movement

For twenty years, we have witnessed a culture of power abuse grow within the institutional animal advocacy movement. Secrets, lies, and aggressive suppression of criticism have enabled personal damage and betrayal of public trust to continue.

Now, allegations have surfaced in the media of inappropriate s*xual conduct and power abuse by former CEO Wayne Pacelle and former Vice President Paul Shapiro of the Humane Society of the United States, along with former Executive Vice President Nick Cooney of Mercy for Animals. While none of this is a surprise to many veteran activists, it should signal the beginning of a long overdue course correction for our movement.

Sexual harassment, now widely understood to be more about domination than s*x, is but one of several ways that influential leadership figures, not all of them men, have compulsively preyed on those serving the cause. Does harming another in this way arise from a common mindset, regardless of the nature and identity of the victim? Could the same attitudes and addictions that compel some people to exploit and betray the trust of other human beings also make them more likely to exploit members of other species, or an entire cause devoted to their liberation?

The HumaneMyth team examines these questions and more, in our new essay, Domination Games: Coming to terms with a culture of power abuse in the institutional animal advocacy movement.

Cate Evens - Running Scared (Official Video) 04/02/2017

This new music video by Cate Evans demonstrates the true meaning of being a voice for the vulnerable. Paradoxically, when we take responsibility for bringing to light some of the ugliest things we humans do to others, we come into contact with what is most beautiful in our nature: the capacity to identify with those viewed and treated as nobodies, to publicly stand in solidarity with them, and to become their fierce and uncompromising advocates. This is what it takes to bring a terrible injustice to an end.
