A couple days ago, Students for Justice in Palestine at Cornell University () hosted a magnificent event about poetry, truth-telling, resistance, solidarity, and settler colonialism in Occupied Palestine. Afterward, the guest of honor, the revolutionary poet , stopped by for a sandwich.
He had the msakhan.
Mahmoud Darwish used to say “A poet is made up of a thousand poets.” Mohammed, you are that miraculous poet who has awakened a thousand poets. I should know. I am one of them. Mohammed, you have given us so many gifts. Your language. Your courage. Your anger. Yours is a poetry that makes unmistakable demands. To see and say what is. To recognize and identify cruelty but never fear or stand in awe of it. We will deliver, Mohammed. You showed us how. You went into that forbidden territory and ungated it for us. We will deliver. Please believe.
