Today, the Irving Fire Department remembers our first Line of Duty Death. Firefighter James Pressnall, E-4-B shift, died February 28, 1984, due to injuries sustained while fighting an apartment building fire. FF Pressnall was the first documented firefighter in America to die in a lightweight truss-constructed structure. Since his death, FF Pressnall has been referenced many times in books and presentations across the county regarding the inherent danger lightweight truss construction poses to firefighters. His sacrifice has contributed to countless lives saved through lessons learned. We learned as a profession how to better approach the challenges of these structures differently and understand the science behind the danger these structures present to us.
FF Pressnall will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Brother Pressnall.

Today, the Irving Fire Department honors the legacy of Wendell McCluer. Firefighter McCluer, T-9 C shift, died on January 25, 1988. McCluer devoted 25 years to the City of Irving, 23 were served with the fire department. His commitment to this profession was unmeasurable, McCluer passed rendering aid to a stranded motorist. Many kind words have been spoken of McCluer: “He was the best the department could produce” “He gave himself unselfishly” “True Friend.” FF McCluer will never be forgotten. Rest easy Brother McCluer.

Twenty-four years ago, Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins #830 was brutally murdered when he responded to a suspicious circumstance call at the Oshman's Sporting Goods here in Irving. Seven escaped convicts were in the midst of committing an aggravated robbery and ambushed Officer Hawkins, killing him before he could get out of his police car. Today, we remember our brother and honor his sacrifice. The Hawkins family will forever be in our hearts. We will never forget!
