Spring rains are a catalyst for many pest species to make themselves known. Mosquitos love standing water to breed. Termites swarm after rains. And ants move away from flooded soil. These climbers have no fear. Be on the lookout for some uninvited guests after the rains the next couple of days!

Termite activity is at its annual peak right now in DFW! It's officially SWARM SEASON. Colonies are sending out winged termites to start new nests underground. They like to swarm in the late afternoon or evening after a rainstorm. If you see anything that looks like flying ants or see piles of wings that they've shed, you may have a problem. By the time you actually see a mouse or rat indoors, you already have a problem. It means that rodents have gained access to your home and may have a nest somewhere inside you can't see. This little artist at work is a mud dauber wasp creating a nest home for her eggs. She's a solitary wasp and usually builds her home under eaves, in garages, or in other accessible structures. She's considered a beneficial insect and not usually aggressive, but is capable of stinging. We're seeing a lot of these nests right now, and they can become a nuisance because several generations can spawn in a year.
