This last week I flew to appointments in AZ and Northern Nevada. My plan was to go to Reno, but due to high winds blowing directly across the runway, and Reno’s cross wind runway being closed I had to divert to Carson City. After I diverted I realized it was going to be an interesting ride home.

I left Carson City early after a brief meeting knowing I was in for a bumpy ride home. Carson City to Bullhead/Laughlin was uneventful. With a strong tail wind it was 3.25 hour flight. The flight from Bullhead City to Albuquerque was the roller coaster ride of the year. I had a 43 knot tailwind quartering off my right rear. My ground speed averaged 147 knots over the ground, and the turbulence from the winds rushing over the mountains of northern AZ/NM was moderate/heavy. The winds hitting the Colorado Plateau resulted in extreme updrafts which made holding altitude difficult.

From Bullhead City to Albuquerque took only 2.75 hours, a trip of 511 miles.
