Gavin has autism, and part of that means he sometimes plays differently. One time he was happily building a mountain of balls when some kids intentionally knocked it down because they knew it would upset him. When Gavin cried, they laughed—along with their parents.

It hurt to watch. But instead of reacting with anger, I chose to hold his hand and walk away. I wanted Gavin to learn that we don’t let other people’s cruelty change who we are.

To every parent raising a child with autism: keep going. The world may not always understand them, but they will always understand your love.
