But here we are.

This should be obvious by now, the problem isn’t the people. It’s the power. So you can’t just switch them out and hope the new guy won’t use the power. You have to actually stop them all from using it.
As St. George Tucker said, “It is the due restraint and not the moderation of rulers that constitutes a state of liberty.”

It’s the people who are supposed to protect and defend their own constitution and their own liberty,
whether the government happens to like it or not.
As John Hancock put it, “the powers reserved by the people render them secure.”
They just need to learn them and use them.
When they say it’s “for your safety,” they really mean “so we can control you.”
That’s from James Madison, the father of the Constitution. He said, “Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to provisions against danger, real or pretended, from abroad.”
And when government doesn’t have a real threat for their fear-mongering, they’ll just make one up.
