30 YEARS WITHOUT A NEW ALBUM โ AND THE ONE PERSON WHO NEVER WANTED TO MAKE IT JUST DID. Jakob Nowell was just a baby when his father Brad died of an overdose in 1996. He grew up surrounded by Sublime's music โ but never once got to hear it from his dad in person. In an interview with NPR's Morning Edition, Jakob said he never wanted any part of replacing his father.
The emotional weight and responsibility behind it was just too much to carry. But when original members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson brought him into the rehearsal room in 2023, something none of them planned started to take shape. Casual jams quietly became real songs. On June 12, Sublime released "Until the Sun Explodes" โ their first album in 30 years.
Jakob doesn't see it as a comeback. He calls it an epilogue. And he's already said this will probably be the last Sublime album โ unless his own kid one day decides to carry it forward.
