We are so grateful to be part of one of the most vibrant arts scenes you’ll find anywhere and to work with truly inspiring individuals day in and day out. No one was more inspiring to us than Chris Wiersema—a passionate, kind, creative, adventuresome artist and arts champion dedicated to feeding his community weird things while firmly believing each and every one of us should have a seat at the welcoming table he prepared.

Julia Correia, a second-year student pursuing a BFA in 3D Design and BA in Violin Performance, found her place at Hancher during the fall semester of her freshman year. Initially an usher, Julia quickly developed devotion to her responsibilities and creating a welcoming environment to Hancher patrons. By the following summer, Julia became a Hancher house manager.

“I feel like I’ve grown a lot from being an usher and a house manager. I’ve always been managed and never in a management position before, but now I get the experience to manage, develop new skills, create a positive environment, and make people feel welcome.”

Next Wednesday, during One Day for Iowa, the University of Iowa’s 24-hour online day of giving, you have the opportunity to support students like Julia. Your donation to the Hancher Student Support Fund empowers students to gain valuable experience in leadership positions and the performing arts.
