Last night, Adjmi's play "Stereophonic" won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, after becoming the most Tony-nominated play in history, with 13 nods in 10 categories, making it the most Tony-nominated play in history.

Adjmi attended the Iowa Playwrights Workshop from 1998 to 2001. Art Borreca, co-head of the Iowa Playwrights Workshop, says Adjmi’s recognition is momentous — and reflects the distinction of the UI program and its students.

ALBUM REVIEW: Old Crow Medicine Show Celebrates Its Own Traditions on ‘Jubilee’ 05/16/2024

“Old Crow Medicine Show are so consistently good that it’s easy to take them for granted…[T]hey were the antecedent to bands like the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. And their catalog is crammed with albums that replicate the unbridled joy and communion of their live shows." (The Boston Globe)

ALBUM REVIEW: Old Crow Medicine Show Celebrates Its Own Traditions on ‘Jubilee’ Old Crow Medicine Show’s latest album, "Jubilee," is a celebration of their own past and ongoing relevance, and of old-timey music as a hoedown that never ends but might pick up a fair number of new steps along the way.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of saxophone legend David Sanborn, who studied at the University of Iowa School of Music in the 1960s, performed in the original Hancher Auditorium, and was featured in the inaugural season at our current facility. Even if you don't recognize his name, you've undoubtedly heard his music. Sanborn collaborated with many greats including Marcus Miller, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, and David Bowie.

In the playbill for Sanborn's 2007 performance at Hancher, Dennis Green, General Manager of Jazz 88.3 KCCK, wrote, "Sanborn just isn't willing to have his music slotted into the compartments the music industry and some fans prefer. This has made him something of a target, not always mainstream enough for the jazz purists, yet not sugarcoated for the pop world either. When pressed, [Sanborn] told Downbeat, 'I am a jazz fan who makes records. I'll leave it to someone else to decide how much jazz is in there.'"

Today we celebrate Sanborn's remarkable legacy and the impact he made on the world of jazz and music more generally.
