Should substitute teaching be a civic requirement? Many people have strong opinions about schools, teachers, student behavior, curriculum, testing, and education policy.
But how many have actually spent a full day managing a classroom? What if every citizen spent just ONE day serving as a substitute teacher?
Not to become an educator.
Not to solve every challenge.
But to better understand the realities our schools face every day.
Imagine the impact:
✅ Greater appreciation for teachers
✅ Stronger school-community relationships
✅ More informed conversations about education
✅ Increased empathy for students and families
The truth is that schools are one of the few institutions that touch nearly every community member. Yet many people never see what happens inside a classroom after they graduate. One day in a classroom might change how we think about education forever.
So I'll ask the question:
**Should substitute teaching be a civic requirement, similar to jury duty or community service?** Thoughts?
Examining our current reality and drivers for growth requires a collaborative approach. We're focusing on co-planning next steps and leveraging support from coaches for asynchronous learning, moving away from top-down mandates to foster commitment.

A strong school starts with a strong and diverse team of educators. 🌟
Research continues to show that students benefit when they learn from teachers who bring a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives into the classroom. Yet recruiting and retaining diverse educators remains a challenge for many districts.
In our latest blog, *Building and Retaining a Diverse Teaching Workforce: A Principal's Action Guide*, we explore practical strategies school leaders can implement to attract, support, and retain talented educators. From targeted recruitment efforts and mentorship programs to fostering inclusive school cultures and creating leadership pathways, principals play a critical role in building a workforce that reflects the communities they serve.
When educators feel valued, supported, and empowered, everyone benefits—teachers, students, and schools alike.
What strategies have been most effective in your district for recruiting and retaining diverse educators?
When facing resistance to terms like 'equity,' empathy is key. If a student struggles, especially in subjects like math, explore their interests. Connecting math to real-world goals, like landscaping or real estate, can unlock their motivation and understanding.

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future conversation; it's a present reality. According to the Workforce 2040 report, AI is expected to transform every sector of the economy, creating new opportunities while reshaping existing jobs.
For education leaders, the question isn't whether AI will impact schools.
The question is:
👉 How do we prepare students and teachers to thrive alongside AI?
The report highlights a future where human-machine collaboration becomes the norm. That means our students will need more than content knowledge.
They'll need:
✅ Critical thinking
✅ Creativity
✅ Problem-solving
✅ Communication
✅ Learning agility
The most valuable skills in the AI era will be the ones that make us uniquely human. Schools that embrace innovation while developing these durable skills will be best positioned to prepare students for the future.
How is your district approaching AI integration?
What if the future workforce isn't built in college, but starts in our schools today? Businesses can't wait for others to develop talent. Strong communities build partnerships between schools, businesses, and organizations. Students need real-world experience, mentors, and internships. When schools and employers collaborate, students gain skills, businesses secure talent, and communities thrive. The future belongs to those who connect learning with opportunity.

Pickleball in Sandals? Absolutely. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Evansville and spend time at Escalade Sports for a formal event that turned into one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in a while.
-Yes, I played pickleball.
-Yes, I was wearing a dress.
-Yes, I was wearing sandals.
And yes, I had an absolute blast.
Beyond the friendly competition, the highlight of the weekend was meeting several incredible students from the Orr Fellowship. If you haven't explored Evansville or visited Escalade Sports, I highly recommend adding both to your list.
