Father’s Day weekend!

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free.
This year, Martinsville is holding its first Juneteenth celebration at the Martinsville Area Senior Center on Blue Bluff Road. The event is free and open to the public from 5-8 p.m.
Organizer Jeannine Lee Ferrer said what started as a small gathering quickly grew once word spread. She believes the response shows that many people are ready to help shape a new future for the city.
"Honoring our past, celebrating our freedom and building our future" is the theme of the event.
Ferrer, who grew up in Muncie where Juneteenth celebrations have been held for decades, moved to Martinsville six years ago. She said it was time to bring that tradition to her adopted hometown.
"This coming July 4th, Independence Day, we're going to celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, and that is our shared history, right? Well, so is Juneteenth," Ferrer said.
Martinsville has long carried the reputation of being a sundown town. In 1968, 21-year-old Carol Jenkins was killed in a racially motivated attack while selling encyclopedias. Her death became a symbol of the city's painful past.
Ferrer said she knew that history before moving to Martinsville, but her own positive experience has given her hope.
"If we live here, we also need to start thinking about the future and hopefully distancing ourselves from some of those negative things that have happened and hopefully providing new memories and positive things for this community," she said.
Indiana historian Sampson Levingston with Walk And Talk Indy said he also grew up hearing about Martinsville's reputation.
"It is one of the places where you might see K*K flyer propaganda at the McDonald's. I remember that from high school, driving down to Bloomington," Levingston said.
Still, he said that history does not define everyone in Martinsville. He praised Ferrer for bringing the community together and hopes other rural communities will do the same.
"I think everybody's culture and history deserves to be celebrated, especially Black culture and heritage here in Indiana. And I'm very excited to hear about how it goes, and hopefully it's something that can continue to grow," Levingston said.
Ferrer hopes the inaugural event in Martinsville is only the beginning.

Can you believe it's already been over 30 years since the first "Toy Story" movie?
Over the years we've watched as Woody and Buzz became best friends, met new friends Jessie and Bullseye after Woody was kidnapped, found a new home with Bonnie after Andy went to college, and reunited with Bo Peep at a traveling carnival when Woody said goodbye to Buzz to help other lost toys find new owners.
In this one, Woody returns to help Jessie, Buzz and the rest of the toys deal with the threat of losing Bonnie's love to technology, in the form of Lilypad . . . a frog-shaped tablet voiced by Greta Lee (from Apple TV's "The Morning Show").
Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, and Joan Cusack are all back as Buzz, Woody and Jessie. Plus Craig Robinson joins the cast as a GPS-themed hippo, and Conan O'Brien is a toilet training tech toy called Mr. Smarty Pants.
Taylor Swift also wrote a song for the movie called "I Knew It, I Knew You".

Carlos Mencia Is in Jail for Alleged Tax Fraud
Carlos Mencia was arrested yesterday. And I know what you're thinking, but it wasn't joke theft. He's accused of stealing from the state of California.
The District Attorney's office held a press conference yesterday to announce Mencia's arrest for failing to report $8.7 million in income. They say he owes $300,000, plus interest and penalties.
The D.A. says Mencia was contacted almost 80 times between 2019 and 2024, but he ghosted them. He also called Mencia one of California's biggest tax delinquents.
He's facing 12 counts, six for his personal taxes and six for his business. He could face 10 YEARS in prison. His bail is set at $250,000, and he'll be arraigned on Monday.
The IRS is also after Mencia. They filed a lien back in 2021, claiming he didn't pay his taxes for three years, and owes them $1.2 million.

Former Child Star Who Voiced Lilo in "Lilo & Stitch" Passed Away
Former child star Daveigh Chase passed away at 35. Her boyfriend says she contracted meningitis and several blood infections, which led to sepsis.
Daveigh was the voice of Lilo in the original "Lilo & Stitch" and in the animated sequels and TV series. She was also Samara in "The Ring", Samantha in "Donnie Darko", and the voice of Chihiro in the English dub of "Spirited Away".
Her longtime manager John Ryan says Daveigh had been struggling for a while, and he and her family have been trying to find and help her. At the end of 2025, there was a disturbing video that showed her skinny and living on Skid Row.
John was able to speak on the phone with her to get her help, but when he went to Skid Row, she was gone. He also commented on how Daveigh's supposed boyfriend set up a GoFundMe before her death.
Quote, "Apparently, a man claiming to be her 'boyfriend' that none of us friends or her family has heard of has set up a GoFundMe on 'her and her family's behalf'. I can confirm Daveigh has a trust account set up at SAG to cover all costs."
