Karpe Litigation Group has filed a federal civil rights claim for the police shooting death of Brandon Decker by a deputy with the Grant County Sheriff's Office. On November 1, 2023, Deputy David Meeks from the Grant County Sheriff went to the home of Brandon Decker regarding a report of a person threatening to shoot a car with a pellet gun.
Deputy Meeks had interacted with Brandon before and knew Brandon to have mental disabilities. When the Deputy Meeks arrived on scene Brandon was not acting aggressively and did not pose an immediate threat to others. From the first moments of the encounter, Deputy Meeks actively escalated the situation. Within one minute twenty-two seconds of the deputy's arrival, Brandon had been shot and mortally wounded by Meeks.
Meeks and the Grant County Sheriff have been sued by our office for civil rights violations under 42 U.S.C. §1983 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Hobart man's suit over police dog bite headed to federal court A lawsuit filed by a Hobart man last month alleges that two of the city's police officers violated the man's civil rights when they allowed a police dog to bite and severely injure his arm.
Karpe Litigation Group is representing Jerimiah Hood for injuries he recieved when he was attacked and bitten by a police dog during a traffic stop.
On March 30, 2024 at approximately 11:18pm Officer Andrew J. Buxton of the Greenwood Police Department was conducting speed enforcement. At that time Officer Buxton activated his lights and pursued Hood for speeding. Hood stopped safely in a nearby well lighted area at the Latitudes Apartments.
Greenwood Officers made Hood exit the vehicle with his hands up and walk backwards toward the police cruiser behind Hoods vehicle. Hood was then kept standing still with his hands above his head for almost 14 second while police questioned him. Greenwood Police Department K9 Officer B. Louzon and his K9 partner Tommie, moved behind Hood and had him at dog point. Officer Louzon commanded police canine Tommie to attack Hood. After the dog failed to attack Hood immediately Officer Louzon shoved Hood from behind several times. Hood kept his hands raised. The other officers shoved Hood against a nearby vehicle. Hood was held in this position for almost thirty seconds while police canine Tommie was allowed to repeatedly bite Hood’s legs.
Jerimiah Hood was charged with resisting police and other incidental matters. Those charges were subsequently dropped. Karpe Litigation Group is pursuing a claim for monetary damages for Mr. Hood's injuries and violation of his civil rights.
Karpe Litigation Group has filed a civil rights suit in federal court on behalf of the Estate of Wyatt Beckler against the City of Fort Wayne and the Fort Wayne Police Department for the shooting death of Wyatt Beckler.
18 year old Wyatt Beckler was known to have emotional problems including depression, self-harm, and suicidal tendencies. Fort Wayne Police had been to his home on a number of occasions about mental health issues. On November 2, 2022 Wyatt called 911 and reported an armed person matching his own description. He did not answer additional questions by the 911 operator or provide his name.
Rather than follow up at the home address provided in the 911 call, Officer Andrew Fry went to the neighborhood and searched for a person matching Wyatt Beckler's description. Upon locating Wyatt Beckler the officer initiated a stop without legal reasonable suspicion. When Wyatt did not comply with some of Officer Fry's commands, the officer shot Wyatt 3 times in the back, killing him. No gun was found on Wyatt Beckler.
The attached video is the original news report from 21 Alive regarding the shooting.

A case study of lawyer Craig Karpe's achievement. During many of those claims involved auto accidents, others claimed that police officers had injured people or violated their civil rights while making arrests.
Attorney Craig Karpe obtained a $650,000 settlement for the family of Aaron Bailey, an unarmed fleeing motorist whom IMPD officers fatally shot in 2017.
In a case comparable to the death of Herman Whitfield, he also obtained undisclosed compensation for the family of Paul Daniels, a man who passed away in police custody in 2018 while experiencing a mental health episode.
In a number of cases involving police misconduct, attorney Craig Karpe has fought for the rights of his clients. Contact us if you or a member of your family needs legal assistance.
