We are aware of a spear-phishing attempt recently made against a subset of Scouting volunteers in our district. There is no indication that a Scouting account was compromised. The scammers are instead utilizing email addresses publicly available on the web. Individuals who received the message requesting gift cards should not reply to the message or click any links. If you did reply, stop communications with the scammers and follow FTC recommendations that can be found here: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams

This incident serves as a good reminder of the importance to look out for spear-phishing.
• Scammers personalize messages to get recipients to take action by emulating a person of authority
• Formal language doesn’t match what the purported sender would normally write
• Lack of punctuation and incorrect capitalization
• From address is unrecognized, but not all emails programs show it

Whenever you are in doubt and especially if money is involved, always verbally verify the request with the sender.
