We just want to say a big thank you for the swift response to our crate plea! Inside training crates have begun arriving at the warehouse today during Pet Food Pantry. This was definitely a highlight for when the day slowed down.

Request for Used or New Dog Training Crates

We work to get dogs inside people's homes at least overnight and during extreme heat and cold weather. The wire training crates are a good tool to help transition dogs inside the house. We help thousands of low-income families every year. So we go through a lot of the 42" and 48" wire crates for dogs over 40 lbs. We are running really low on the crates now.

We gladly accept used 42" and 48" training crates. So if you have any stashed in your garage or basement unused, or even see them on someone's curb as trash, please bring them by when we are open to the public. We will clean and disinfect them, make minor repairs, and up-cycle them back out to our client's dogs.

If you can drop them off, we would really appreciate it. We are open every Thursday from 1-6 pm and every Sunday from 12-3 pm. We are located at 1505 N Sherman Dr, Indianapolis, 46201. If those hours don't work for you, please email [email protected] and we will see if we can pick them up.

Doesn't Bubba have the sweetest smile?

Bubba was one of the stops our volunteer veterinarian made during her most recent visit. They visited him to check on how his lick granuloma and ear infection were doing since starting treatment. Seems like he is doing much better if his smile is anything to go by!

Meet some of the pets from last week's spay/neuter transport.!

Thursday was quite the busy day, with a total of 12 spay/neuter surgeries scheduled, transported to/from, and completed. That is 12 pets pets that will not further contribute to the pet overpopulation crisis in our city by producing litters. Spay/neuter helps keeps pet in their homes with the people who love them. 💚

Busy Week for our Pet Food Pantry

At the beginning of each month, we add two additional pantry days, the first Saturday and the first Wednesday. So over the first week of August, we will be open a total of 4 days to assist with pet food and supplies.

Earlier this week, we started running a little low on both cat and dog kibble. To ensure we had enough for the long week, we made a trip to our friends at Tractor Supply Co. to purchase food. They give us a generous non-profit discount.

Although much of our food and supplies are obtained through donations, we sometimes need to buy the kibble. We buy in bulk from Tractor Supply, in bags as big as 50 lbs. They then need to be repackaged into the various sizes we distribute directly to clients.

We had a lot of reliable hard-working volunteers this weekend. They showed up on time and worked for hours to get our dog and cat food prepped in portions ready to head out the door with our clients for their animals.

Lots of moving parts to stay up and running. But it pays off. Through our pantry each month, we provide pet food and basic supplies to hundreds of households to keep thousands of dogs and cats in their own homes.

A highlight for our case managers is when they go on home visits to touch base with clients. On this home visit they got to say hello to Clarabelle, a sweet older german shepherd. They love getting to see pups who are well-loved and living inside.

Home visits can range from checking in on a pet after their spay/neuter procedure, dropping off pet food, visits with our volunteer vet, checking on how a pet is enjoying a new fence (especially if they are a known escape artist), and more.

We are very grateful to our friends at Ed Martin Automotive who help us stay staffed with compassionate, dedicated case managers. We speak for the dogs when we say THANK YOU!

What happens when a client no longer needs their fenced-in enclosure?

Our clients let us know when the fence is no longer needed via our helpline. Brett, our fence program coordinator, will work with the client to determine the best time for our team to come out and deconstruct the build. Once a time is set, our team arrives and gets right to work deconstructing the enclosure and loading it up in our truck.

When they arrive back at the warehouse, the panels are set aside to be cleaned/disinfected/repaired before being returned to our fence storage to be used in the next build. This helps us keep costs low for the program so that we can help more dogs in our city. 💚

Mollie goes home.

As you may recall, almost two weeks ago we got a call from David that his dog had been hit by a car and had an injured leg. David lives outside with his two dogs. He had no resources, let alone transportation, to take her to a vet. So we met him where he lives and brought Mollie back to our warehouse to get her vet care.

It was clear that her back right leg was broken. So we started her on pain meds right way. However, Mollie is such a resilient stoic pooch that she gyrated around like there was no problem. Within a few days, IndyHumane kindly agreed to do the surgical repair. Unfortunately, her femur was shattered. The only real option was amputation. So Mollie is now down 1.0 legs. And spayed and vaccinated. Thank you so much to Dr Rose at Indyhumane.

After her initial surgical recovery at Indyhumane, we brought her back to our warehouse until her incisions were fully healed. Again, she acted like there was no problem, despite the reduction in legs. She was back gyrating around on 3.0 legs. Earlier this week she was ready to go back to David and her old pal Jubilee the shepherd mix. The photos show her reunion with her little family. She is on a secure harness and a secure leash. David equipped the leash with a locking carabiner so no more run-ins with cars for Mollie.
