This lifelong mission has only just begun! If you'd like to know more about what to expect from the book, here's the blurb written by publisher and good friend, Marya Sherron.
"This heartfelt and inspiring book thoughtfully invites readers to truly see individuals with exceptional needs and disabilities-not through the lens of limitation, but through the richness of their humanity. Blending personal reflections with powerful conversations and lived experiences, this collection is a call to connect, understand, and embrace.
While not strictly a self-help book, Transcending Labels offers practical insights and gentle guidance for anyone looking to engage more meaningfully with the disability community. Whether you're a parent, educator, neighbor, or simply someone with an open heart, you'll find value in its thoughtful reflections and real-world application sections.
Inside, you'll discover:
Uplifting stories that challenge assumptions and celebrate individuality
Simple, compassionate ways to foster inclusion and kindness
Encouragement to move from awareness to authentic connection
Let this book be your starting point-or your reminder-that every person is worthy of being seen, heard, and valued."

Transcending Labels is available now 🙂
Here are some thoughts from Jamie Olson, a friend and publisher of Uniquely You Magazine, on what you can expect if you decide to get yourself a copy.
"As the publisher of Uniquely You Magazine, I have had the honor of sharing hundreds of stories from the special needs and disabled communities—stories of resilience, advocacy, joy, and everyday life that too often go unseen. I am also the mom of an autistic son, a role that has profoundly shaped how I view the world, language, and the systems that surround disability. Transcending Labels deeply resonated with me because it reflects what I’ve learned both personally and professionally: people are not defined by diagnoses, and connection begins when we are willing to truly see one another.
This book challenges us to pause and examine the labels we so easily use—sometimes for clarity, sometimes for convenience, but often without realizing the limitations they impose. Mitch invites readers to look beyond categories and instead lean into curiosity, empathy, and authentic relationship. As a parent, I know how often my son is seen through the lens of autism before he is seen as a child with humor, interests, struggles, and gifts. This book gives language and perspective to what so many families experience every day.
What makes Transcending Labels especially powerful is its emphasis on shared humanity. Disability is not a separate experience reserved for “others”—it is part of the human story. Through real-life narratives and thoughtful reflection, Mitch reminds us that connection is not about fixing or changing someone, but about honoring dignity, voice, and belonging. This is the kind of mindset shift our communities, schools, workplaces, and faith spaces desperately need.
I believe this book is not only timely, but necessary. It is a call to move from awareness to action, from assumptions to understanding, and from labels to lasting connection. For families like mine—and for anyone who desires a more inclusive and compassionate world—Transcending Labels offers both hope and a practical path forward." -Jamie Olson

Transcending Labels: Conversations That Break Barriers and Build Understanding is available NOW!
Here’s where you can get the book: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/transcending-labels-mitch-stevens/1149405160?ean=9781961605664
Here are my primary objectives with this project, which has become a lifelong mission.
- Help people to become more empathetic and aware of the immense value within all human beings, especially those labeled with “special needs” and/or “disabilities”
- One at a time, more people like Robert and Stephen (two of my great friends) have a new friend in their corner to support them and their mental health because of reading the messages in the book.
I’m currently working on potential partnership agreements to contribute a percentage of proceeds to organizations that support individuals with special needs and/or disabilities, and will update when that is finalized.
If you read the book and get value from it, please consider leaving a review and sharing the book with a loved one.
