Sunday marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. On a lighter note, it’s the start of peak season for backyard gatherings, grilling, and outdoor projects.

Here are four reminders to keep the extra daylight hours incident-free:
🔥 Grill smart. Keep grills at least 10 feet from siding, deck railings, and overhangs, and never grill under a covered porch.
🔌 Mind the cords. Outdoor extension cords should be rated for exterior use and should never be daisy-chained, especially with string lights or power tools.
❄️ Watch the AC load. Window units and portable ACs draw a lot of current. Avoid running them on the same circuit as other major appliances.
🕯️ Extinguish fires fully. Fire pits, citronella candles, and tiki torches should be completely out, not just smoldering, before you call it a night.

Wind and rain damage are among the most common, yet preventable, property claims of the season. Here are four things homeowners should check before the next storm hits:
🔹 Inspect the roof and gutters. Missing shingles and clogged gutters are two of the fastest paths to water damage.
🔹 Check windows, doors, and exterior seals. Cracked caulk and worn weatherstripping let wind-driven rain in faster than most people expect.
🔹 Evaluate trees and landscaping. Overhanging branches and weakened trees are a potential hazard.
🔹 Know where water enters and exits the home. Confirm the sump pump is working and that grading slopes away from the foundation before heavy rain arrives.
