Every single adoption makes us happy, but there are some that stand out to us.

Scooter spent a few months with us waiting for his family. Not because there was anything wrong with him—quite the opposite. He was a favorite among our team. Like many senior, large-breed dogs, he was simply overlooked until his new family came along.

We feel lucky to see Scooter being loved, spoiled, and cherished exactly the way he deserves. His adopters have given him the gift of comfort, companionship, and a home to enjoy his golden years, and we couldn't be happier for him.

If you've ever considered adopting a senior pet, this is your sign! Senior dogs have so much love left to give, and sometimes they're just waiting for someone to take a chance on them.

You can meet all of our adoptable pets, young and old, at indyhumane.org ❤️🐾

It takes a team to do this work. ❤️ Every day, our staff shows up ready to care for animals in need. Our volunteers generously give their time. Our fosters open their homes and hearts. It takes all of us working together to give the animals in our care the best lives possible while they wait for their families.

So what does a day in the life of an IndyHumane pup actually look like?
🐾 Early morning: Our Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) begin taking dogs outside for their first potty breaks of the day. While they're enjoying fresh air and stretching their legs, their kennels are cleaned and refreshed.
☀️ Mid-morning: A volunteer takes them out for a walk, enrichment time, or simply some one-on-one attention and sunshine.
🎾 Afternoons: It's time for Doggy Playgroups! Our Enrichment Team helps dogs safely socialize, play, build confidence, lounge around, sniff, nap, or do whatever makes them happiest. The goal is simple: let dogs be dogs.
🌳 Evenings: Another volunteer outing means more walks, outdoor play sessions, or sniff breaks before settling in for the evening.

Between all those adventures? Dogs may visit our medical team, enjoy extra volunteer walks, work on training, snack on treats, or squeeze in an afternoon nap.

It doesn't work unless we all work together. Whether you donate your time, provide supplies from our wishlist, foster an animal, or make a financial gift, your support directly impacts the lives of animals who need us most.

Want to be part of the team? We'd love to have you. Learn about ways you can get involved at indyhumane.org

When our staff arrived this morning around 5 AM, they found a surprise waiting in one of our play yards. Meet Evan Smalls. ❤️

We don't know exactly when he was left here, or what circumstances led someone to make that decision. What we do know is that this little guy was thrilled to be found. The employee who discovered him said he was immediately jumping up and down, soaking up every bit of attention he could get. It's hard not to fall for a dog who's so happy, despite everything.

✨ If you're facing a difficult situation with your pet, you don't have to navigate it alone. Our Pet Resource Center was created to help families access support before surrendering or abandoning a beloved pet becomes their only option. Whether you need food, supplies, resources, or simply someone to talk through your options with, we're here to help—not to judge.

Keeping pets in the homes where they're already loved is always our goal. It's often the best outcome for both animals and the people who care about them.

For now, Evan is safe, loved, and receiving plenty of attention from our team. We can't wait to see what his future holds!

Hayes has been settling into his foster home, and do you know what he's been doing most? Sleeping. 💤

One of the biggest changes dogs experience when they leave the shelter is finally being able to get deep, restful sleep. Shelters are full of activity...there are dogs barking, people coming and going, cleaning, feeding, and daily routines that make it difficult to truly relax. When many dogs enter foster care, the first thing they want to do is catch up on all the rest they've been missing!

Hayes' foster pawrent has been encouraging him to do exactly that. ❤️

When he's awake, Hayes is showing off just how sweet he is. While he can be a little nervous when meeting new people, all he really needs is a little patience. Give him a few minutes, and he's leaning in for pets, following you around the house, and covering you in kisses like you've been best friends forever.

You can apply to adopt Hayes at indyhumane.org

Right now, what Ember needs most is a home to continue healing in. ❤️

When Ember arrived at IndyHumane, her skin was painfully swollen and irritated, and even taking a few steps was uncomfortable for her. Her owner made the difficult decision to surrender her, knowing her condition had gone untreated for far too long. Our medical team got to work immediately helping her feel comfortable again, and while Ember has already shown incredible improvement, healing from severe dermatitis takes time.

Today, Ember is in much less pain, and every day she’s becoming more comfortable, confident, and happy. She’ll need ongoing care for her skin and ears, including medicated baths and oral medication, but what will help her heal most is a patient, loving home where she can finally rest and feel safe.
Ember can be a little shy at first, but underneath that timid exterior is an incredibly sweet girl just waiting to trust someone again.

Ember is available for adoption at IndyHumane!
