GEO Academies

Kyla Martin started at GEO Next Generation High School Baton Rouge her sophomore year after hearing about the associate’s degree program. She graduated with her associate’s degree in liberal arts. It allowed her to skip directly to her main course classes upon entering Louisiana State University. She majored in art and design with a minor in psychology, graduating in just two years! Next year, she plans to enter a master's program in architecture to become a licensed architect. “Residential [architecture] is what I’m interested in, but I’m really open to all types of architecture.”

Kyla still remembers GEO fondly. “The college dual enrollment program [at GEO] was one of the highlights for me. I feel like it really prepared me for college. It allowed me to get more exposure to college-level classes and really opened my mind.” Exploration has continued to be very important to her. Originally, Kyla wanted to go into the medical field. Upon doing a summer internship, she changed her mind. Art has always been important to her, but getting to explore her options at LSU finalized the switch to architecture.

She advises current students to do the same. “Stay focused. Stay on top of your work. Don’t get distracted… but you don’t have to have everything figured out.” That’s a lesson that never expires. Good luck Kyla!

Stanford University’s Center for Research on Education Outcomes CREDO at Stanford University is the nation’s leader on charter school performance. They have released many nationally-recognized reports on charter school performance in specific regions/cities and states, and two reporting on the performance of charter management organizations (CMO) across the country. The first national CMO report was released in 2013 and the second one in 2023. These reports study reading and math growth among CMOs.

In the 2013 report, GEO Academies ranked in the top 41% of CMOs in reading growth and 30% in math growth.

By 2023, GEO was among the 34% of CMOs that made the elite list of “Gap-Buster” CMOs. CREDO defines “Gap-Buster” as CMOs that demonstrate both: Strong student growth, and Success in overcoming achievement disparities.

Between the 2013 and 2023 CREDO studies, CREDO documents GEO not only maintained positive academic growth over the decade but did so at a level that CREDO recognized as helping close achievement gaps for students.

🎉 Two ribbon cuttings in two days = two powerful partnerships making a difference in Baton Rouge!

Last Wednesday, we celebrated the opening of GEO Prep Baker’s new campus on Bentley Drive, made possible through our partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System—who owns the building we're now leasing. Enrollment at GEO Prep Baker has nearly tripled this year, and students are loving the park-like atmosphere of their new school!

The very next day, we marked a milestone for GEO Next Generation High School — 100% of our juniors and seniors are taking either college or career courses, as well as their high school classes, on Baton Rouge Community College's Acadian campus. Enrollment at GEO Next Generation High School has increased by 20% and we're excited about our growing partnership with BRCC!

Both ribbon cuttings reflect our deep commitment to collaboration and the success of the students and families we serve. From education to service, our partnerships are paving the way for lasting impact.
