Before we can create the future we want, we have to tell the truth about the culture we've inherited.

No law, election, or charismatic leader can permanently protect a people whose culture is fragmented. Lasting protection comes when neighbors become collaborators, businesses become partners, families become stabilizers, and institutions become accountable to one another.

Culture is not entertainment. Culture is infrastructure.

When we intentionally build an ecosystem of shared values, economic cooperation, wellness, safety, and mutual responsibility, we don't just solve isolated problems—we create the conditions where people can thrive and protect one another.

The current challenges facing the Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio remind us why this matters. As uncertainty grows around immigration enforcement and Temporary Protected Status (TPS), communities with strong relationships, trusted institutions, and collaborative networks are better positioned to respond with resilience rather than fear. The lesson extends far beyond one city: communities are strongest when they are connected before a crisis arrives.

Credibility: Is it what people see or what people have done?

There is a question we need to ask ourselves:

Have we created a culture where a person’s service only counts if it was recorded, posted, liked and witnessed by people who were not there?

Because history says otherwise.

There are human beings all over this planet who have dedicated their entire lives to the advancement of humanity. They feed people. They protect children. They provide healthcare. They teach. They build. They organize. They walk into places where others are afraid to go.

Some have slept without comfort so someone else could eat.

Some have risked their safety because they believed another human life mattered.

Some have lost their lives trying to help others.

And many of their names will never be known.

Does that mean they lacked credibility?

Absolutely not.

Their credibility was built in the trenches of service.

For some people, service is not a project. It is not a brand. It is not a photo opportunity. It is not a way to collect recognition.

It is a lifestyle.

I spent 23 years living and working in Northeastern Africa in a cultural ecosystem where service was woven into everyday life. People carried responsibilities because the community needed them. Food systems, healthcare, education, housing, agriculture and community structures did not happen by accident. People sacrificed time, energy and resources to make them exist.

That kind of work teaches you something:

A lack of visibility does not equal a lack of value.

Some people have spent decades building lives, saving lives, supporting families and strengthening communities and they did it before every moment had to become content.

Documentation matters. Accountability matters. Evidence matters. I have those.

But a camera is not the only witness.

Character is a witness.

The people you helped are witnesses.

The communities you built are witnesses.

The lives changed because you showed up are witnesses.

Before questioning someone’s credibility because you haven't personally seen their receipts, remember this:

There is a whole world of people doing work you will never see.

And their contribution does not become smaller simply because you were not standing there when it happened.

Some people built platforms.

Others built people.

Both exist.

But never confuse a quiet life of service with a life that lacked impact.
