Ever wonder why we do the things we do at your routine OB visits? Here’s some insight into that information!
Fundal height & why we measure it:
• Helps estimate the baby’s growth.
• Tracks whether the baby is growing as expected.
• Can identify concerns such as:
• Baby measuring too small (possible growth restriction).
• Baby measuring too large.
• Too much or too little amniotic fluid.
• Incorrect due date.
Fetal heart rate & why we check it:
• Confirms the baby is alive and well.
• Monitors the baby’s heart rate pattern.
• A normal fetal heart rate is generally 120–160 beats per minute.
• Changes in heart rate may indicate a need for further evaluation.
Blood pressure & why we check it:
• Screens for high blood pressure disorders during pregnancy.
• Helps detect Preeclampsia, a serious condition that can affect both mother and baby.
• Monitors for signs of:
• Gestational hypertension.
• Preeclampsia.
• Other cardiovascular concerns.
Together, fundal height, fetal heart rate, and blood pressure provide a quick picture of:
• How the baby is growing.
• How the baby is tolerating the pregnancy.
• How the mother’s body is adapting to pregnancy.
These routine checks help healthcare providers identify potential concerns early and determine whether additional testing or monitoring is needed.
