Come out and hear about recent (as in that day) IUP archaeological research.
Step back to the earliest days of Indiana County and discover a forgotten frontier community!
Join us on Thursday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m. at The Armory for "An 18th Century River Town in Indiana County: Results from Newport Site Archaeological Excavations."
Founded shortly after the American Revolution, Newport Village was Indiana County's first non-Native settlement and the site of the county's first Fourth of July celebration. Once home to taverns, blacksmith shops, residences, a post office, and river transportation facilities along the Conemaugh River, Newport played an important role in the movement of people and goods across western Pennsylvania.
Learn how ongoing archaeological excavations are uncovering the story of this long-abandoned river town and revealing what daily life was like on Pennsylvania's early frontier.
Don't miss this fascinating look into Indiana County's earliest chapter of settlement and trade!

Wonderwerk Cave bones reveal possible fire use by human ancestors 1.79 million years ago The discovery of fire was a major milestone in human evolution, giving our ancestors a way to stay warm, ward off predators, and eventually start cooking food. But exactly when this first happened is still intensely debated, as unambiguous evidence is difficult to find.

What Arjun said…
For Arjun Sharda, anthropology revealed something powerful: that the stories, rituals, and social patterns shaping everyday life also shape our world.
As a high school and undergraduate student involved with AAA’s National Association of Student Anthropologists Section, Arjun represents the curiosity and insight driving the next generation of anthropologists. His perspective reminds us that anthropology is not just about observing human behavior, but understanding the deeper meanings and systems behind it.
