Indiana Varsity Indians Hold Onto Victory As Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds Almost Erase 4-Run Deficit

Indiana Varsity Indians built a 4-run lead in the fifth inning and then held off Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds's charge for a 6-5 victory on Thursday. Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds closed the gap by scoring on a single, a triple, and a double.

Charlie Manzi collected three hits in four at bats in the win. Manzi hit a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning, doubled in the first inning, and doubled in the seventh inning.

An error put Indiana Varsity Indians on the board in the top of the first.

Matt Baker doubled to center field, which helped Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds tie the game at two in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, Indiana Varsity Indians broke up the tie when Ethan Shank singled, scoring one run. Then a single by Sully VanHoose followed to extend the lead to 5-2.

Manzi hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the fifth for the Indiana Varsity Indians.

Brady Oakes earned the win for Indiana Varsity Indians. The hurler gave up six hits and two runs over four innings, striking out four and walking two. Matt Riendeau took the loss for Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds. The right-handed pitcher went one inning, giving up five runs (three earned) on one hit, striking out three and walking four. Manzi appeared in relief for Indiana Varsity Indians.

VanHoose drove the middle of the lineup, leading Indiana Varsity Indians with two runs batted in. VanHoose went 1-for-3 on the day. Indiana Varsity Indians turned two double plays in the game. Indiana Varsity Indians were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Shank had the most chances in the field with eight.

Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds amassed 11 hits in the game. Tyler Bergkoetter and Baker were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds. Matt Evans led Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds with three hits in four at bats. Eddie Rosado collected two hits for Holy Ghost Prep Varsity Firebirds in four at bats.
