Last month I shared that my original plan was to become a coach. As it turns out, I did a lot of coaching over the years. It just wasn't on a baseball field.

My introduction to business came through my parents, who owned an Orange Julius in Orlando. After college, my career took me from the restaurant industry to Wolters Kluwer and ultimately to real estate. The industries were very different, but working with people, managing teams, and helping others succeed were constants throughout much of my career.

Looking back, maybe I didn't stray quite as far from that original plan as I thought. Coaching can take a lot of different forms, and I've been fortunate to do quite a bit of it along the way.

Here’s something you may not know about me. Baseball was a big part of my life growing up, and I went to college on a baseball scholarship. I started at Valencia Community College and then graduated from UCF with a degree in education because, at the time, I thought I was going to become a coach.

Obviously, life took me in a different direction. Looking back, though, I can see how much of what I learned through baseball stayed with me: teamwork, preparation, persistence, and giving my best every time I stepped onto the field. I was competitive then, and that part of me certainly hasn’t changed.

Sometimes the path you start out on isn’t where you end up, and that can turn out to be a very good thing. Did your life or career turn out the way you thought it would when you were younger?
