Manufacturing is not standing still.

In April, U.S. manufacturing activity stayed in expansion territory for the fourth straight month, with 13 of 18 manufacturing industries reporting growth. Manufacturing output also rose 0.6%, driven by strength in durable goods, machinery, transportation equipment, and related sectors.

At the same time, hiring remains cautious.

Manufacturing employment was essentially flat in April, but there were still 462,000 manufacturing job openings in March, according to BLS data.

That tells the real story.

Manufacturers are not hiring just to hire. They are being selective. They need people who understand the work, the environment, the pace, and the expectations from day one.
