Capstan winches are a go-to for line handling on the water. Bloom builds capstans designed for real working conditions.

Bloom capstan winches are primarily used on fishing boats and marine craft, especially for pot and net haulers and dock and barge applications. They’re also commonly used on vehicles in the utility industry, and can be ordered galvanized for corrosive environments.

Whatever your environment looks like, Bloom has the winch for the job.

We’re proud to recognize two meaningful moments at Bloom!

The Invictus Spirit Award is presented twice a year to an employee who truly goes above and beyond. Each recipient is selected by the previous award winner, making it an especially meaningful tradition.

After nearly 13 years with Bloom, Matt Hill is retiring from his role as Fabrication Lead. Matt has been a true jack of all trades, sharing his knowledge and skills with countless team members over the years. His impact on our team is lasting, and he will be greatly missed.

As part of his retirement, Matt passed along Bloom’s bi-annual Invictus Spirit Award to our newest recipient, Shelby Buhlman.

Shelby joined Bloom in the summer of 2025 and has already proven to be a valuable asset to the team. Shelby brings a consistently positive attitude and is always willing to do whatever it takes to help Bloom succeed.

Please join us in congratulating Shelby and thanking Matt for his many years of dedication and leadership.

May is when a lot of marine work shifts from planning to full throttle. If you’re running marine winches in harsh conditions, reliability is all about preparation and prevention. Here are a few tips:

▪️ Inspect for corrosion and wear
▪️ Keep components clean and properly lubricated
▪️ Verify cable condition before and after pulls

At Bloom Manufacturing, we build winches that have proven performance in fishing and marine environments. Check out worm gear, planetary, and capstan winches that built to last in the harshest conditions: https://ow.ly/Vfp350YKuit

One of the fastest ways to burn time (and equipment) is guessing what winch capacity fits your needs. While it may seem safer to simply choose the biggest winch available, oversizing can reduce control, increase line speed, and put unnecessary stress on rigging, anchors, and surrounding equipment.

Here’s our rule of thumb: Take your load weight and multiply it by 1.5 to help size the right winch load rating—then factor in terrain, resistance, and duty cycle.

Understanding Winch Block Pulleys: Mechanics and Applications 05/12/2026

“Winch block pulleys” is one of the most searched winch topics for a reason. A winch block pulley, also known as a pulley block or sn**ch block, is a wheel-and-axle device that redirects a winch line and improves pulling capacity. When rope or wire is routed through the sheave, the load is distributed across multiple line segments, reducing strain on the winch and increasing control.
