Today we celebrate Juneteenth with a quote from a 2019 interview from the Making Gay History podcast with Barbara Smith, a Black le***an activist who has been a warrior against racial, s*xual, heteros*xual, and class oppression.
Juneteenth is celebrated during Pride month, and later we'll celebrate the Stonewall Riots on June 28. Today, this month, and every day, we celebrate and honor marginalized communities while recognizing that both racism and q***rphobia are still rampant in the US. No one is free until all are free.

Under a cursive Juneteenth is the quote: “Fundamental political and social change comes from the fervor of people who are the most oppressed, saying, ‘It has got to be different from now on.' That has been my experience of how movements are built. That’s the spirit of Stonewall. That’s the spirit of the women’s movement. It was the spirit of the anti-slavery movement. It was the spirit of the Black civil rights movement" attributed to Barbara Smith]

Happy birthday, Gilbert Baker!
Gilbert is perhaps best known for creating the first pride flag in 1978, originally using 8 colors, including hot pink and teal, each color representing part of LGBTQ culture. But did you know he was also a Kansas native? Yep, he was born in Chanute and grew up in Parsons!
Want to know more about him? Read his memoir, Rainbow Warrior: My Life in Color.
[ID: In the background is the original pride flag, starting with hot pink, red, orange, yellow, green, teal, indigo, and purple. In each color is the meaning of each color: pink for s*x, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, teal for magic/art, indigo for serenity, and purple for spirit. On the right is a polaroid style photo of Gilbert Baker standing in front of a rainbow banner from the IN Kansas City article on June 2, 2024]

🌈Happy Harvey Milk Day!
Harvey Milk was a visionary civil and human rights leader who became one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States when he won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. (harveymilk.com)

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, & Biphobia ( ). Both in the US and abroad, today is a global moment of solidarity and resistance for LGBTQIA+ communities.
True democracy must be built on inclusion, and thus we lift up and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people. This community has always been at the heart of movements for justice and freedom – organizing, resisting, and caring for one another.
You may be in a place where you don't feel safe expressing who you are. Know that there are people out there standing in solidarity with you, today and every day.
