“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

There are some acts of kindness we receive that we never forget. For me, one such act was gifted to me in 2013. I remember laying down on my living room couch after Brittany had dropped me off from another round of chemotherapy treatment. I was exhausted — utterly wiped out. I do not know how long I had been laying there when I heard it. It was the sound of a man talking, vehicle doors closing, and then a lawn mower firing up. As I became more awake, I realized it was really close, like just outside my big picture window.

But who could that be? Many of my neighbors were retired but who would be cutting their grass at that moment? I had to check it out. I used all of the strength I had to pull myself up and peek out the living room blinds. This was when I understood the gift that was being given to me. A church member and friend, along with two boys, had come to my house unannounced and were completing all of the needed yard work around my house.

I cannot tell you how much of a blessing these guys were to me. I told the Lord that if He healed me, I wanted to do that (yard work) for other patients. And in 2023, we began our Community Care Days in Lincoln County (TN) and Madison County (AL), and have since expanded into Limestone County (AL). As we prepare to complete yard work for cancer patients on June 13th, I’m thankful for God’s healing hand and the opportunity to serve Him by serving others.

Today, we had the privilege of presenting a $5,000 Medical Aid Grant to Hannah Joy Davis, one of the beneficiaries of our Slawburger Chase 5K.

Hannah Joy has been courageously enduring treatment since 2023 for Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma, a very rare form of liver cancer that primarily affects adolescents and young adults, particularly teenage girls.
While no amount of financial assistance can remove the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis, we hope this grant helps ease some of the burden and allows Hannah and her family to focus on what matters most—her treatment, healing, and time together.

This grant was made possible through the generosity of our sponsors, runners, volunteers, donors, and everyone who supports the Slawburger Chase 5K each year. Your support directly impacts families in our community who are facing some of life’s most difficult battles.

Please join us in continuing to pray for Hannah Joy and her family as she continues her cancer journey.
