A couple of trees with large wounds and decay. Wounds from pruning, storm damage/tear out, and rubbing are common. Large wounds give more opportunity for decay, pests and disease.

Mulch against trunks. Extreme case showing stem girdling roots encouraged by improper mulching. This simple mistake will cause major decline in your trees.
