Huntsville House Rabbits

My name was Parsley. I’ll receive a new name soon. My family bought me at “Urban Queen” a few months ago on a whim. They promised me forever. Forever ended yesterday.

Yesterday, they left me behind at a shelter. They dumped me on a table, walked through the door, and didn’t look back. I wasn’t even worth a second thought. “Owner surrender” at a shelter that doesn’t handle rabbits. “No longer want”.

I don’t know where I am. I don’t know why they left. I am scared. I still have 10-12 years of life to enjoy if I am taken care of. Where did my family go?

I’m still a very young boy, but I’m no longer small enough and cute enough for them.

Now I need help. I need someone who can foster me or give me a forever home. Firstly, I need a name that I can keep—one that wasn’t given by someone who will leave me behind.

Bunny Basics was a lot of fun on Saturday! Bunana, Sydney, Wyatt, and Heidi met folks and got pets and cuddles!
Adopted bunnies Isaac, Harrison, and many others came by for nail trims! We really enjoyed seeing everyone!

Bunny Basics is tomorrow from 1-2:30 at Southpaw Animal Clinic of Madison! We'll have several of our foster bunnies there and we'll be teaching the bunny care overview class and answering questions! Nelson (the lop rabbit from our previous post) has had quite a few volunteers and we are pleased to say that he has even found a forever home!

Congratulations to Pippin and his new bunny mom! After being rescued as a baby bunny abandoned on the 4th of July weekend two years ago, Pippin was adopted yesterday and is getting comfortable in his new home which has a large space for him and lots of bunny toys! His bunny mom worked with us to make sure his space was save and the best possible! He is the center of attention and getting so many snuggles! When his new bunny mom met him at Bunny Basics, Pippin sat happily on her lap and started grooming her. It was immediate love for both of them!

Please don't be fooled. We've had some bad actors recently posting scam comments with links on our posts (including sympathy posts involving rabbits who passed--seriously, nothing is off limits to these people!).

We will soon have our iconic purple rescue shirts for sale, but when they're ready, we'll have an official post with official info that is actually backed up by our rescue. :)

If it has a picture of a bunny on it, that doesn't mean it is safe. Products marketed to rabbit owners are often harmful and even can be deadly! Seeds are often deadly and are a big no-no. We teach not to feed your bunny pellets that contain seeds at our monthly Bunny Basics event and our online virtual class. If you can't attend one of those or another reputable class (such as Dolly's Dream Home's virtual class), please please please do lots of research on rabbit products. (And you can always ask too!)

We were recently contacted by a family who generously offered to donate some supplies after their beloved bunny passed away.
Whenever we receive donations like this, we ask if they could share the cause of death if it is known.
We were heartbroken and shocked when we learned what had happened to their bunny. 😞💔
After spending approximately $4,000 on emergency veterinary care and surgery, their precious bunny sadly did not survive. 😞
The family has given us permission to share their painful experience in the hope that other rabbit parents can learn from it and potentially prevent another tragedy.
They had been feeding their rabbit a pellet mix that contained seeds.
During surgery, the veterinarian removed an undigested seed that had become lodged in the bunny’s small intestine. They hoped she would recover, but unfortunately, she passed away. 💔According to the family, a necropsy later confirmed that the intestinal blockage was caused by an undigested seed.💔💔
What makes this especially upsetting is that many products marketed as “complete & balanced” rabbit food contain seeds, corn, colorful pieces, and other ingredients that may lead rabbit owners to believe they are appropriate.
We cannot blame this family. The package had a picture of a rabbit on it.
It is completely understandable that someone would assume a product specifically marketed for rabbits is safe for rabbits.
A good-quality rabbit pellet should be uniform and should not contain whole seeds, corn kernels, dried peas, nuts, or colorful treat pieces. Rabbits have a specialized herbivorous digestive system designed primarily for a high-fiber diet. Hard, indigestible pieces can contribute to serious gastrointestinal problems, including potentially life-threatening obstruction.
Please be especially cautious with foods containing whole seeds or hard hulls. If you are unsure whether a food or treat is appropriate for your rabbit, speak with a rabbit-savvy veterinarian rather than relying solely on the picture or marketing on the package.
Please help us share this family’s story and educate other bunny parents. Something being sold for rabbits does not automatically mean it is a good or safe choice for them.
Our deepest condolences and gratitude go to this family for allowing us to share such a painful experience in the hope that it may help save another bunny.
