We at the 1653 Foundation are looking to introduce natural solutions to remedy fouled shoreline environments near our projects; we have come to deeply respect the power of the oyster.

Forget pearls - these local mollusk, neighbors of our can filter 50 gallons of water per day, like natural super water filters. In our Halesite Park remediation effort, oysters will play a major role.

In this long-neglected park, our work starts on dry land but will extend below the water line to the living shoreline and oyster reef we plan to build. So the 1653 Foundation Halesite Park effort will not only brighten the physical land with the obvious change but also improve the water quality in the nearby harbor area.

On Founders’ Day April 11, a group of Huntington civic, business and nonprofit leaders, including the 1653 Foundation, The Huntington Historical Society and the African American Museum, celebrated our community and history in the charming Conklin Barn.

The lively event featured period music, a wonderful selection of wines and appetizers, an accomplished sommelier to guide our choices, and a robust collaboration between people and organizations dedicated to life in the Town of Huntington.

Our appreciation to all who joined us and was a part of making it a successful afternoon.

Town of Huntington Founders Day
An afternoon of History, Music, and Community

Three hundred and seventy years ago, a small group of settlers put down roots on the north shore of Long Island and built something that endures to this day. This Founders Day, we invite you to celebrate that legacy — and the people working to carry it forward.

Join us Saturday April 11th from 3-5pm at the historic Conklin Barn for complimentary a wine and cheese tasting, period music and living history demonstrations throughout the event.
