Happy West Virginia Day! 🥳✨🎉

Today we celebrate the Mountain State we are proud to call home.

West Virginia is more than beautiful mountains and winding rivers. It is neighbors helping neighbors, strong communities, rich traditions, and stories that connect generations.

At the library, we are honored to help preserve and share those stories. Whether you’re researching local history, exploring West Virginia authors, tracing your family roots, discovering digital resources, or simply checking out your next great read, we’re here to help you connect with the people, places, and history that make our state special.

Today, we celebrate West Virginia’s past, present, and future and the communities that make it such a wonderful place to live.

Happy West Virginia Day from all of us at the library! ❤️📚🌄

This week’s local history spotlight honors West Virginia’s first state organized pride parade. While Huntington as a city wouldn’t hold a pride parade until 2019, Charleston would hold the state's first pride festival on June 22, 1997. Following the national theme of “Equality through Visibility,” the march would run for about a mile along Kanawha Boulevard from the city office to the capitol building. While the parade was the main focus of the event, the festival would also feature a picnic, musical performances, and local speakers. Of note, this particular celebration began Rainbow Pride of West Virginia's tradition of awarding “Power of One Medals”, which are awards intended for openly LGBTQ+ West Virginia natives who have demonstrated the difference that one person can make within their community. While the first parade only had about 300 attendees, Charleston’s Pride Celebration now hosts thousands as the celebration continues to grow despite legislative pressure. Now, this celebration is just one of many across the mountain state, showcasing the importance of belonging and acceptance.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates freedom, honors resilience, and recognizes the rich contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.

At the library, we believe that stories help us learn, grow, and better understand one another. We are proud to offer books, films, historical resources, and voices that preserve history, celebrate culture, and inspire future generations.

Whether you’re looking to learn more about Juneteenth, explore Black history, discover a new author, or share a story with your family, we invite you to visit the library and explore all that we have to offer.

Stories connect us. Learning strengthens us. And libraries ensure that everyone has access to both.

Happy Juneteenth from all of us at the library. ❤️📚

P.S. All of our locations are open today. Stop in and see us! 🥳

DINO-MITE! We had a roaring good time as we traveled back in time for some prehistoric fun. Children romped and stomped their way through the library as dancing dinosaurs, listened to T-riffic stories, made a craft, counted and learned all about dinosaurs, and more. Next week we’ll be digging in the dirt so dress for a mess!

We had an amazing kick off to our Summer Reading Program! Our community came out and enjoyed visiting our local organizations & businesses while getting to play games, create things, ate free food and treats, received free books, jumped in a pirate shaped bouncy house, had caricatures drawn, and so much more. Thanks to all of our vendors. They all made the day so special for the families. We’d like to give a special shout out to Stewarts Original Hot Dogs and to Giovanni's Pizza of Huntington, WV for their donation/great deal on the hotdogs and pizza. You can sign up for the program throughout June and July at all Cabell Libraries.
