Spring Valley ProStart - The Hungry Wolf

When there's catering work to be done (250 covers) our mean ol teacher steals all of the seats so we can't sit down!? Is standing for long periods of time part of being in the food service world?!

This seems more like REAL work than simulated!!

6 hours on a Saturday?! Yeah, we got that!

The Hungry Wolf students just knocked out a catering order for 70!! Although our bum of a teacher (hi it's me, I'm the problem haha) forgot to snap finished product pics, we will post some from the guests later :)

Day 2 back from break = 1st Years making over 200 SUGAR COOKIES!!!

2nd Years whipped up some muffins and danishes for tomorrow's coffee bar as well as some lemon bars for an upcoming dinner!

Today, Year 1 students resparked their learning with poached eggs! Not a bad first day back after break!

Over the next 2 weeks we have catering events totaling over 400 people! It's about to get busy!

What a day!!!! Chef Kyle from Guyan Golf and Country Club coming through with some protein breakdown lessons!!

We learned some tricks of the trade for spatchcocking a whole chicken, fabricating another for all the parts, trimming a beef tenderloin, and portioning a side of salmon!

We are so thankful to have such amazing supporters of our program and our education! Thank you again, Chef!

Golden Apple | Tyler Bowen A teacher in Wayne County is training his students to run food businesses.

Yesterday our 1st Year ProStart students were able to play a part in the History Department's 1st (hopefully annual) Renaissance Faire!

It is incredibly important for our young people to learn to think outside of their own traditions and cultures. Sometimes that is incredibly difficult to learn from a book alone, especially when it comes to nutrition, food customs, and hospitality.

When Mrs. Mitchell asked if we would like to join in on this adventure in some way, the 2nd Year students and Mr. Bowen immediately went into planning mode. What better way to bring bookwork to life?!

Mentored by their upperclassmen peers, groups of 1st Year students spent time learning cultural foods of not only a different country, but of a whole different time period, so they could be "vendors" in their marketplace!

2nd Year students got firsthand experience in coaching and leadership while their assigned groups of 1st Year students developed their historical research, menu and recipes creation, food preparation, and customer service skills.

What an amazing experience! Great job everyone!!

This year your ProStart Culinary team took 6th place in the 24th annual Hospitality Cup in Charleston, WV. The Hospitality Cup is the WV ProStart Invitational where high school students from around the state showcase their culinary and restaurant management skills. Culinary teams have 60 minutes to create a three-course meal using only two butane burners. The teams are judged based on taste, teamwork, skill, safety and sanitation.
