After this Sunday, I am not sure when our next pop-up will be. We have a lot of work to do for our opening this fall and thus we'll be doing pop-ups only sporadically. So if you want to shop with us, we will be at The Bar Method in Huntington Friday through Sunday and at 187 Park Avenue Thursday through Sunday.

BAR METHOD:
50 Stewart Ave Suite 1, Huntington, NY 11743
Friday: 5pm-8pm
Saturday: 8am - 5pm
Sunday: 8am - 3pm

ROSIE'S VINTAGE FUTURE LOCATION:
187 Park Ave, Huntington, NY 11743
Thursday - Saturday: 10am - 7pm
Sunday: 10am - 3pm

Directions: If you're going north on New York Ave, make your first right into the lot just past Coneys Marine (which is also on your right). The parking lot entrance is on New York Ave, not Park Ave. Don't trust your GPS. Do trust the big sign at the curb that says "BOOKS" with an arrow pointing right.

We are learning what y'all like to see at these pop-ups and what is most efficient and cost effective for us. Come see what we've determined. If you liked our pop-up at Flux Coffee last weekend, you'll like our pop-up at The Bar Method. If you didn't get a chance to check us out at Flux, come on down. Now is the time.

We are changing our September hours. We'll be open at 187 Park Ave Thursday through Sunday for the rest of this month, 10am - 7pm. At the end of the week, much of that huge remainder order I mentioned last time will make its way there. Lots of fiction, lots of history, lots of other stuff that I dont recall as I type this. I do recall that we just shelved a bunch of used book stock - philosophy, teen fiction, etc. The rest of the remainder order will be stockpiled for when we open the permanent location (BTW we've begun the process of building 70 bookcases...).

Directions: If you're going north on New York Ave, make your first right into the lot just past Coneys Marine (which is also on your right). The parking lot entrance is on New York Ave, not Park Ave. Don't trust your GPS.

Next weekend, September 17th and 18th, we are at Flux Coffee in Farmingdale from 8am to 5pm Saturday and 8am to 3pm Sunday.

211 Main Street,
Farmingdale, NY 11735

REMEMBER all of our pop-ups have totally different stock.

The weekend after that, September 23rd to 25th we are at Bar Method in Huntington, hours tbd.

50 Stewart Ave Suite 1
Huntington, NY 11743

We will continue to juggle running multiple pop-ups simultaneously, listing rare and out of print books on online marketplaces, shipping Kickstarter rewards, buying books (email us), accepting book and record donations, beginning to schedule book signings, thinking about the logistics of moving the contents of a 2,000 square foot warehouse a couple miles, fixing up a building, thinking about how to lay out the sections within the permanent location, the psychology of what makes people buy things, and how our current circumstances affect that, staffing and at least one other thing.

Is it possible for you to locate some books for me?
We have a full calendar of events this month!

We'll be at the cottage at 187 Park Ave (on the property of Rosie's Vintage future home) for the rest of the month, 10am - 7pm each day. It is a different sort of location than our other pop-ups - not a lot of foot traffic out here so come by! We are there each day from 10am to 7pm. If you're going north on New York Ave, make your first right into the lot just past Coneys Marine (which is also on your right). The parking lot entrance is on New York Ave, not Park Ave. Don't trust your GPS.

This weekend, September 10th and 11th, we are at Daniel Gale in Cold Spring Harbor. We will be there 9am - 6:30pm Saturday and Sunday.

5 Main Street
Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724

REMEMBER all of our pop-ups have totally different stock. So visit each of our locations (maybe stop by two pop-ups in one day) and see a totally different selection. We are getting a massive remainder order in a day or two which we will be splitting between our locations. Think recently published and/or nearly new books for a fraction of list price. Also, we have some intriguing and/or somewhat salacious pulp books at 187 Park Ave. Good sci fi and mystery pulp too.

Next weekend, September 17th and 18th, we are at Flux Coffee in Farmingdale from 8am to 5pm Saturday and 8am to 3pm Sunday.

211 Main Street,
Farmingdale, NY 11735

The weekend after that, September 23rd to 25th we are at Bar Method in Huntington, hours tbd.

Our September pop-up will be in a cottage down by the water. For the next month we'll be setting up shop at 187 Park Ave, Huntington. You guys ever shop at Rosie's Vintage? It's a great antique store in Huntington and they're moving to a big old house at 187 Park Ave (they'll be open for business in October). We'll be in the cottage on the property. If I were you I'd pack lunch and a blanket, come shop at our bookstore and then sit in a shady patch on the lawn or walk down to the water and read. You could also grab a book and then head over to Prime. We will be bringing a lot of different inventory and we'll be open September 1st!

The Next Chapter at the new home of Rosie's Vintage:
187 Park Ave.
Huntington, NY 11743

If you're headed north on New York Ave, the entrance to the parking lot you should use is your first right past Coneys Marine, just before the first roundabout. It is the old Daniel Gale location.

Hours
September: 7 days a week
10am - 7pm

We'll be alphabetizing the books this time around so we'll be able to better assist you in finding things. They will be in general sections for now and when we open the permanent location, books will be in much more specific sections. We will also be accepting donations and purchasing books at this location. To sell your books please email [email protected] to make an appointment. To donate, just bring them in during store hours!

Secondly, we are partnering with Cinema Arts Centre for an upcoming documentary about author Patricia Highsmith (she wrote "The Price of Salt," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," etc.) called "Loving Highsmith." Shop with The Next Chapter in the next couple of days, show your receipt at Cinema Arts Centre's box office and receive a $5 discount on your ticket.

Thursday, September 1
7:30pm

Maybe see you there!

If you haven't heard, our permanent location will be at 204 New York Ave, a five minute walk (though there is also a parking lot) from where Book R***e was. It is diagonally across the street from Six Harbors Brewing Company. We will keep updating you all here but follow us on Instagram to see more :)

p.s. It has come to my attention that not everyone knows what a pop-up store is! It is a shop that opens temporarily in some location and intends to operate there for only a short amount of time.

Less than a week left to shop with us at our August pop-up location! We are at the Daniel Gale building on the corner of Main Street and New York Ave in Huntington - right next door to where Book R***e was.

For a bit of fun, we are going to be doing something we've never done before. We will be hiding (in plain sight) a first edition worth over $200 in the shelves. This book will be marked like a used book, priced like a used book (think in the less-than-$10-dollar range) and whoever finds it, will pay for it as if it is a used book. It'll be on the shelf starting Saturday morning. No hints. Come find it :)

263 Main Street
Huntington, NY 11743

Hours:
Sunday - Thursday: 9am - 9pm
Friday - Saturday: 9am - 10pm

Stay tuned for a very exciting calendar of pop-up events. We will be partnering with a lot of local businesses over the upcoming weeks (months, years...). If you have a business and are interested in hosting us, get in touch!

For the past weekish, The Next Chapter LI has made a bookstore within the front space of the Daniel Gale building on the corner of Main Street and New York Ave in Huntington. We restock the shelves each morning and throughout the day. We've got a bunch of bookcases in there and we put out tables of books outside as well. But, as the space is somewhat limited and because we want to keep it fresh, we are doing a pull and a sale (shoppable now). Thus, you get some good books (that didn't spend very long on the shelf) at a discount ($2-$6) and these books, as used books, were inexpensive to begin with. If it does well, we'll do more of it.

We've been watching the foot traffic in town and so we've changed our hours:

Hours:
Sunday - Thursday
9am - 9pm
Friday - Saturday
9am - 10pm

Address:
263 Main Street
Huntington, NY 11743

Remember, the Daniel Gale building is right next door to where Book R***e was. We will be there for all of August.

If you can't make it, we've just added a bunch of art and pop-up gift books to our website. Check some of them out here: https://www.thenextchapterli.com/shop/25

We will also be doing a pop-up at Main Street Nursery on August 19th and 20th - this will happen while our Daniel Gale pop-up is going on as well.

Main Street Nursery Pop-Up Hours:
Friday, August 19th: 9am - 5pm
Saturday, August 20th: 9am - 3pm

Address:
475 Main St, Huntington, NY 11743

If you haven't heard, our permanent location will be at 204 New York Ave, a five minute walk (though there is also a parking lot) from where Book R***e was and next door to Stella Blue. We will keep updating you all here but follow us on Instagram (instagram.com/thenextchapterli/) to see more :)

If you missed our pop-up today, perhaps because you were afraid of being washed into the Northport Harbor, (see video) tomorrow you have another chance to take off those shoes, roll up those pants, stride across Main Street (as we witnessed multiple times today) and purchase a novel or work of non-fiction. But it might not rain so you could just leave your shoes on and come get a book and a coffee instead.

Date: Sunday 6/26

Location: Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Avenue Huntington, NY 11743

Pop-Up in Cinema Arts Centre's café: 11:30am - 7pm

Film: "Hello, Bookstore" at 2pm (tickets: https://bit.ly/3zQ5ki6)

Q&A: with the filmmaker, Adam Zax, The Bookstore owner, Matt Tannenbaum and me (Mallory Braun) after the film

The following blurb should sound a bit familiar to you all,

"In the shadow of the pandemic, a small town rallies to protect a beloved local bookstore in its hour of need. A landmark in Lenox, Massachusetts, The Bookstore is a magical, beatnik gem thanks to its owner, Matt Tannenbaum, whose passion for stories runs deep. Presiding at The Bookstore for over forty years, Matt is a true bard of the Berkshires and his shop is the kind of place to get lost in. This intimate portrait of The Bookstore and the family at its heart offers a journey through good times, hard times and the stories hidden on the shelves."

I could give you a few more details on what's been going on behind the scenes, but you'll have to come to the event to hear :)

It will also be one of your last chances to pick up your Kickstarter reward. Hope to see you at Cinema Arts on Sunday!

Good morning! Kickstarter reward t-shirts, tote bags, and bookmarks will be available at The Next Chapter LI pop-up this weekend. Pencils are not quite ready and bumper stickers might be ready in time. If they will be, we'll let you know via Instagram before Saturday.

Huntington Arts Council Pop-Up Bookstore June 11th & 12th:
Saturday hours: 3pm - 8:30pm
Sunday hours: 3pm - 7pm

We will be bringing many different books than we brought last time.

Also, our website is live - thenextchapterli.com! If you make a purchase before Saturday, you can pick it up at the pop-up (we can also ship). If you would just like to see one of our books before you purchase, send an email to [email protected] and we can accommodate you. You can also call us at (631) 482-5008. We've got fiction, mysteries, economics titles, nature writing, collectible books, staff picks, a buyer's guide. We've got a Book Not Found subscription, a Frequent Reader program and an event calendar which you should keep an eye on because we're got some cool events in the works. We have book bundles, soon we'll have more kids books and you'll be able to order new and out of print titles from us. There will be more down the road.

If you still want to donate or sell books, and you contacted us ages ago but we weren't able to accept them then, we are working on reaching back out to you. Please bear with us in this somewhat chaotic time.

Our new warehouse is looking very neat and organized (with a section for furniture stacked approximately 10 feet high and a section for boxes of books, height, about the same). Follow us on Instagram () and you'll see some pics and a short tour (before we organized).

Our lease for a permanent location is progressing. I know this is what you want above all! I do as well - working on it and hope to have some more news on this front very soon.

I'm sure there's more to tell you but maybe this is enough for now. Come to Huntington Arts Council this weekend! Would love to see you there.

An Independent Bookstore | The Next Chapter

It is website launch day! The Next Chapter LI has got books for many tastes and all budgets, we've got an obscure content subscription (see Book Not Found), we've got a Frequent Reader program, some really odd SEO category descriptions (can you tell our staff is made up of a high percentage of writers?). We've got books and about 100 more hidden listings waiting to restock. And we will continuously be restocking because if there's one thing we have no dearth of, it is bound bits of ink-covered paper. Check out said thing we've been working on here.

Other things we've been working on:

1. Moving to a different warehouse - a temporary space to house approximately 1,000 boxes (THANK YOU to the volunteers who helped pack) and a generous heap of furniture. This warehouse has the same total square footage as our last but this one has much higher ceilings which is great when you're trying to fit furniture (and books and records) for a 5,000+ square foot retail store into a 2,000 square foot space. For those of you who still want to donate or sell books, we are still getting settled but soon enough we will schedule some of you to come on down to drop off.

2. Rewards - We have almost everything! Pencils are not quite ready yet and nor are the bumper stickers but boy do we have t-shirts, tote bags and bookmarks. We will be bringing them to the next few pop-ups. The first pop-up set will be Saturday, June 11th from 3:00-8:30pm and Sunday, June 12th from 3:00-7:00pm. We figure evening hours are better for summertime. Go to the beach then come to the bookstore. We plan to ship your reward if you don't come to pick it up but if you are desperate for it immediately and can't come to the pop-up, send an email to [email protected] and we will ship it to ya quick. Tip: on the homepage of our website there is an event calendar so when you wonder when the next pop-up is, you don't have to frantically search through your email using keyword search "The Next Chapter Update" though I am certain none of you do that. But also, please don't stop reading these, I do not like screaming into the wind :)

3. We also have a phone number now which we will answer sporadically. We are still a business run by only 3 full time employees so we prefer email ([email protected]) but phone is cool too: (631) 482-5008.

Bye!

As you may be aware, The Next Chapter LI has to move to another warehouse. This will happen in the next 7 days, by June 1st. We will be hiring movers to do the actual transportation but we have at least 30,000 books which need to be packed. For this, we request assistance. Please note, the warehouse is close quarters, hot and books are heavy. This is very physical work and conditions are not optimal. That said, if you would like to help out, we would be glad to have some volunteers able to pack and lift boxes of books which will be about 30 pounds each. We will teach you the best way to pack books. If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] and we will be in touch.

We will not be having the pop-up bookstore this weekend. However, our website will go live June 1st. Your rewards are in progress and we'll be in touch when we've got them!

Thanks!

Hi all, pop-up this weekend at Huntington Arts Council from 12-5 Saturday and Sunday. The address is 213 Main Street in Huntington. Scroll through the pics to see some of our set-up process. We bring thousands of books. Come by!

Kickstarter rewards are being printed and will be ready soon. You'll be able to pick yours up at a future pop-up or we will ship to you.

Our negotiations for a permanent location continue to look promising as we make significant progress. This location, if we get it, is in Huntington Village, and is a five minute walk from Book R***e. Keep your fingers crossed!

Promising news on our hunt for a temporary warehouse as well. We may have found the right place but again, no definites yet.

We've been doing some buys and accepting donations, sorting, pricing, shelving, boxing, listing, selling used and rare books, ordering remainders, doing a lot of other logistical and business management stuff which would be quite boring to write out here but basically involves thinking about what needs to be done immediately and what can be done later and by whom. And then doing that.

And finally, our website goes live June 1st. thenextchapterli.com - set a reminder!

Please excuse the somewhat cursory nature of some of these updates, I'll give you something much more comprehensive as soon as I can.

Happy Friday,

Mallory

Hello everyone this is Richard Klein. I know you're all used to hearing from Mallory but I want to give you my perspective on this situation.

In order for Mallory to create a bookstore that you will all enjoy and that she will feel is worthy of your patronage, we need to choose a location that is big enough to comfortably display a large number of books and other interesting goods. This decision is fundamental to the success of this project and therefore we want to be sure we find the right spot.

We are in negotiations now for a space that fits that description. While we hammer out the details and prepare to set up and stock this new venture, if these negotiations are successful, we find ourselves in a position where we need to find working/warehouse space. Unfortunately, we have to vacate the space we've been working in. If anyone out there knows of any light warehouse space in the 1,500 square foot range close to town, please let us know.

In other news, Mallory wants all of you to know that she plans to drop The Next Chapter's website on June 1st.

Thank you all and I'll be stopping at the pop-up at Huntington Arts Council this weekend which will run from 12 to 5 Saturday and Sunday. I hope to see you there.

Richard

Hi everyone! Giving lots of advance notice this time for our next pop-up, which will be next weekend, May 7th and 8th. Come spend Mother's Day with books and art! We will be at Huntington Arts Council, 213 Main Street, Huntington from 12-5 both days. Each time we bring more books than last time and we are pleased to report that setup and breakdown is becoming more efficient the more we do it. Tell your friends about the popup! Share this post if you would be so kind. We'd love to see a ton of people there next weekend.

On a permanent location note... we've had HVAC guys and roofers on the roof (Richard and I went up there too) of the building we're looking at, a contractor in the ceiling, a plumber in the basement and things are looking promising. But we know nothing is in stone until it is so hold your hopes at arms length for now. No deals are signed.

Other than that, we'll be announcing the website drop date in the next email. We've hired another former Book R***e employee (who happens to be an excellent writer - we've got a few of em' now and we think you'll be able to read their work before too long). Specific jobs are falling to rest on everyone's shoulders. Who is sorting the books? Researching them? Pricing them? Photographing them? Shelving them in the back of the warehouse? Who is picking them up or is around to accept drop offs? Who will manage order fulfillment? Who will manage social media? Who will visually merchandize the books and make promotional materials? Who will do the bookkeeping and the remainder buying? That's just a drop in the bucket, the tip of the iceberg, I try to avoid clichés but boy can they be tempting. Anyway, we will continue on, meeting challenges and bending them into opportunities.

More soon!

Hi everyone, we will be having another pop-up this weekend! We'll be at Huntington Arts Council both Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm.

We are bringing a lot more books (and bookcases and carts) than last weekend. We'll have the usual fare but this time around, highlights include analyses of Middle Earth, a little bit of jazz, some pagan, evolutionary and Christian texts, LOTS of fiction and sort of an excessive amount of Foucault. There are some very gorgeous/horrifying pop-up art books left as well for those of you brave enough to open books from which paper screwdrivers emerge to impale the reader. Some books obviously do not want to be read. Anyway, hope to see you there! Address is 213 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743. And thank you to everyone who came to the pop-up last weekend - it was a success!

I also want to tell you that now that we have an outlet to sell the books we take in, we've ramped up our buying and acceptance of donations. If you've already contacted us and we've not taken your books yet, we are doing our best to get to you! Thanks to everyone for your generosity and patience.

And lastly, securing a permanent location is still in progress and once I have an update for you, I'll share.

Hope to see you this weekend!

Mallory

Good afternoon! The permanent location Richard and I have been working on is not going to happen. However, we have found another one in town as good (if not better). The necessary materials have been submitted and we have begun the negotiation process. Your patience is appreciated - believe me, I understand the agita.

That said, a few announcements:

1. The Next Chapter will be having a pop-up at Huntington Arts Council this Saturday, April 16th from 12-5pm. We will have books: think pop-up art books of imagined lands, $5 literary fiction, $6 horror books, a couple of Modern Library editions, a drop of philosophy, one or two picture books, a smattering of histories, art books galore, a plethora of first editions. I pulled each book while considering what I think may be of interest to you. If you follow us on Instagram, , you saw some sneak peeks of this. When the permanent store is up and running, expect more remainders, rare, antiquarian, and new books (not to mention all kinds of other treats) than what you will see at Huntington Arts Council. And by the way, Huntington Arts Council is at 213 Main Street in Huntington, NY 11743. The plan is to host these pop-ups on weekends before we have a permanent retail space.

2. Our website drops in the next few weeks. I have a date in mind, but before I say it, I want to make sure the site is absolutely full of good stuff. The titles on the website will be different from the books at the pop-up and vice versa. We have been working diligently to populate a sleek, simple and easily scalable website which is on the same platform as our in-store point of sale system. This will reduce the amount of subscriptions we must pay for while simultaneously making things efficient in the shop. If you can't make it to the pop-up, shop with us online in a few weeks!

3. We have also begun a publication called Book Not Found, wherein we share some obscure, less known, forgotten or intriguing writing which we come across as we sort books. I hope that it will be a place for readers to gather and talk about ideas. I know it isn't always easy to strike up a conversation in person even at your local bookshop - especially when your local bookshop doesn't yet have a permanent storefront! I am interested to see what happens here and am looking forward to learning what cool things you guys are thinking about. We'll let you know when you can read it.

4. Did you contribute to the Kickstarter and choose t-shirt as your reward? If so, then check your email for a survey from Kickstarter which I sent out March 30th. I need to know what size shirt you want so that I can make this order as accurate as possible. The order will be placed imminently so please let me know soon! Many of you have already answered the survey, but not everyone.

We are very grateful to the good people at the Huntington Arts Council for offering us this excellent opportunity. Hope to see you this Saturday at 12 and if you can't make it, we will have other pop-ups.

Hope to see you soon,

Mallory

P.S. Hope you like the logo which was made by the artist who made Book R***e's sign :)
